Allegheny County Announces Line-Up for 2013 Summer Concert Series

The concert series kicks off on Friday, May 31.

Allegheny County officials have announced the line-up for the 2013 Summer Concert Series.    The Pittsburgh CLO will kick off the concert series on Friday, May 31, with “A Gleeful Evening, Vol. 3” featuring Gene Kelly Award winners at the South Park Amphitheater. Pittsburgh Opera will begin the season on Sunday, June 2 at the Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater. Summer performances include Grammy Award winners Sarah Watkins, the Yellowjackets and Rickie Lee Jones at Hartwood Acres, as well as Grammy Award nominees Monty Alexander, Sixpence None the Richer and James Hunter at South Park. The concert series will come to an end on Sept. 1 with the Allegheny County Music Festival featuring Rusted Root and special guest Joel Plaskett at Hartwood …

Donovan will lead a drum and chant workshop from 7 to 9 p.m. March 8 at Bottlebrush: A Gallery for the Arts in Harmony. Beginners are welcome at the event. The drums will be provided. Photo Gallery: Weather Cooperates for Music Festival at Hartwood Acres

Rusted Root plays to a large crowd for the Allegheny County Music Festival; proceeds benefit underprivileged children.

The forecast was iffy for Sunday, but the actual weather couldn’t have worked out better for everyone who attended the Allegheny County Music Festival at Hartwood Acres. Headliner Rusted Root had fans dancing to the band’s percussion-heavy sound, some forming a conga line to weave through the crowd as the group played old favorites and new numbers of its soon-to-be-released album. Opening were an assortment of acts: students from the We Rock program, conducted by Rusted Root singer-percussionist Liz Berlin; the bands Lightning Box and The Red Western; and young North Hills singer Jaira Burns. After the packages are open and the dust settles post-Christmas, it’s time to start planning your New Year’s Eve celebration. Of course, Pittsburgh has a great "First Night" celebration every year on Dec. 31. Thousands of people gather in the city for a safe, fun way to welcome in the New Year. Officially called Highmark First Night Pittsburgh 2012, this year's event has some great entertainment acts lined up. Things will kick off at 6 p.m., and early visitors can take in the holiday decorations that still are up and glowing around our beautiful city.
