Latrobe beat the Rams 5-0 at Consol Energy Center.
The Pine-Richland hockey team lost to Latrobe, 5-0, in the PIHL Class AA Penguins Cup Championship game. Pine-Richland came out strong in the first period of Wednesday night’s matchup at Consol Energy Center. By the second period, Latrobe (19-3) led 3-0 and continued to pull ahead of the Rams (16-4-2), according to MSA Sports Network. Pine-Richland would have won for the first time since current Chicago Blackhawk Brandon Saad led them to the Class AAA title in 2008. For the Wildcats, this is the fourth championship. Senior Dillon Kessy scores the winning goal.
Pine-Richland forward Dillon Kessey scored the winning goal in overtime Tuesday to upset the no. 1 seeded Bishop Canevin in the Class AA Penguins Cup PIHL semifinals. “I didn't know it went in,” Kessey told the Pittsburgh-Tribune Review. “I looked at the referee and saw his hand signal. I was so excited. I can't describe it. We lost in the quarterfinals when I was a sophomore and last year in the semifinals. To get this is huge for us.” Pine-Richland, the no.4 seed, defeated the Crusaders by a score of 3-2 at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Complex. The Pine-Richland Rams will take on the top-seeded Bishop Canevin Crusaders Tuesday night in the PIHL Class AA semifinals playoff game at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Complex. After a 7-1 victory last week over North Hills, the no. 4 seeded Rams have a regular season record of 14-4-1. If you can’t attend the game in person, there’s still a way to tune into the playoffs. The former Pine-Richland hockey star logs nearly a minute of power-play time against Phoenix. He also could be looking at more playing time over the next month.
Pine-Richland's Brandon Saad started the game and played 13 minutes, 31 seconds of the Chicago Blackhawks' 6-4 victory over Phoenix late Sunday in Glendale, AZ. And he could well expect more NHL ice time over the next month, at least, according to CSNChicago.com The rookie Saad, 20, replaced tough-guy winger Daniel Carcillo, who apparently will miss up to four weeks due to an MCL injury from a run-in Saturday with Los Angeles defenseman Drew Doughty, according to the Chicago Tribune. Against Phoenix late Sunday, Saad started the game with captain Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa. When the Chicago Blackhawks start the 2013 hockey season Saturday, Pine-Richland hockey star Brandon Saad will be on the roster. The Blackhawks' play the Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings at 3 p.m. ET. Saad made the Blackhawks' season-opening roster last year and played two games before being assigned to the Saginaw Spirits. He returned to the Blackhawks for the Stanley Cup playoffs. The winger has been playing for the Blackhawks' AHL affiliate Rockford IceHogs. He was named AHL Player of the Week last week. Varsity, junior varsity and alumni teams played at North Park Ice Rink.
North Allegheny swept the varsity, junior varsity and alumni Ice Storm hockey games Wednesday night at the North Park Ice Rink. The varsity game ended with a 4-1 victory for NA. The JV teams tied at 2-2, then NA made 2 goals in a shoot-out to win the game. NA also won the alumni game. The puck drops at North Park Ice Rink.
UPDATE: KDKA'S Larry Richert will be a guest referee and will drop the puck Wednesday night as rivals Pine-Richland and North Allegheny face off in the second annual Ice Storm hockey game at North Park Ice Rink. The puck drops three times—5 p.m. for the junior varsity game; 6:30 p.m. for the alumni matchup, with Richert as guest referee; and 8 p.m. for the varsity game, with Richert dropping the puck. The gates open at 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 students and free for kids age 10 and under.
