Giant Eagle said this week its delivering more than $70 million in annual customer savings by lowering prices on more than 3,000 grocery items about 15 percent, according to WPXI. The majority of lower everyday prices went in effect Wednesday, with the remaining reductions taking place by April 11. The lowered everyday prices are on a variety of national and Giant Eagle brand dairy, frozen food and processed meat products, as well as grocery items such as cereal, yogurt, condiments, pastas, boxed dinners, canned vegetables, and paper and laundry products. The reloadable plastic smart cards are intended to eliminate the need for paper passes and tickets, according to the Port Authority of Allegheny County.
Giant Eagle's Market District store in Wexford and its store in Gibsonia are among nearly 50 of the grocery chain's locations that will begin selling and renewing the Port Authority's new ConnectCard. The reloadable smart cards are intended to replace paper transit passes and tickets, according to a statement from the Port Authority. Transit patrons can purchase weekly or monthly passes and load that amount onto their cards, then present the cards to ride a Port Authority vehicle. Giant Eagle announced it is eliminating 75 positions, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. Rob Borella, senior director of corporate communications, told the PG the layoffs are part of a continuing effort to cut costs and operate efficiently. Most of the eliminated positions are at the company's headquarters in O'Hara. Giant Eagle employs 36,000 people in four states and about 11,000 in western Pennsylvania, a mix of part-time and full-time workers, the PG reported.
