A change in defense counsel has delayed the trial of a 38-year-old North Side man charged with raping and robbing two women in Ross, and another in Hopewell, in January. Arthur Lamont Henderson has been in the Allegheny County Jail on a $2.5 million bond since his Jan. 20 arrest. A Pittsburgh man who was arrested inside a Marshall Township office building pleaded guilty Wednesday to burglary and was sentenced to 2 1/2 to 5 years incarceration and 10 years probation. Timothy D. Barnett, 51, pleaded guilty to four felonies—two for burglary, one for criminal trespassing and one for criminal attempt. He also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of receiving stolen property. Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas Judge Kathleen A. Durkin imposed the sentence. A former Pine constable charged with making a false report to police is scheduled for a July 10 formal arraignment. Eric Ewing, 54, of Gibsonia, waived his preliminary hearing when he appeared last week before Magisterial District Court Judge William K. Wagner. The misdemeanor charge was issued after Ewing told police someone shot a surveillance flare near his Gibsonia home on April 17, police said. A witness later told police that Ewing shot the flare, according to the criminal complaint. Seventeen women testied against the Wexford rheumatologist during the trial in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court.
After spending the morning testifying that he would never touch a patient inappropriately, Dr. Thomas Tyma was found guilty Monday of indecent assault on 17 women who were his rheumatology patients. Common Pleas Court Judge Donna Jo McDaniel found Tyma guilty of 17 counts of indecent assault and 16 counts of harassment on women who were examined at Allegheny North Arthritis Center in Wexford and Jameson South in New Castle, Lawrence County. She ordered a pre-sentencing report that includes a Mercy Behavioral Health examination before his sentencing May 24. She also ordered Tyma to have no contact with any of the victims. Two rheumatologists testifying Wednesday as expert witnesses said Dr. Thomas Tyma's exams of female patients were appropriate, but one of the experts based that opinion only on the Wexford doctor's clinical notes. When Dr. Chester Oddis was asked about descriptions in testimony from 17 former female patients who said Tyma touched their breasts and buttocks inappropriately, he said those exams were not appropriate. Tyma faces 17 indecent assault charges and 16 harassment charges, based on reports from women who were examined by Tyma at Allegheny North Arthritis Center in Wexford and Jameson South in New Castle. Although the prosecution and defense were ready to proceed Tuesday morning, the second day of Dr. Thomas Tyma's nonjury trial was postponed because of scheduling issues. Common Pleas Court Judge Donna Jo McDaniel postponed the trial because she was presiding over a jury trial in a different case. Thirteen former patients of the 54-year-old rheumatologist testified Monday that he touched them inappropriately during medical exams. Four more women were scheduled to take the stand Tuesday. Tyma, who practiced at Allegheny North Arthritis Center in Wexford and Jameson South in New Castle, is charged with indecent assault and harassment. He lives in Sewickley.

Thirteen former patients of a Wexford rheumatologist took the stand Monday to testify that he touched them inappropriately during medical exams. Dr. Thomas Tyma, 54, who lives in Sewickley, is on trial for 18 counts of indecent assault and harassment in a non-jury trial before Common Pleas Court Judge Donna Jo McDaniel. A 23-year-old Cranberry Township man will stand trial on charges related to pawning or trying to pawn $4,460 in stolen musical instruments and equipment at Waddell's Music Center in Pine Township. Jeremy Joseph Sturgeon waived his preliminary hearing Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge William K. Wagner. His case moves now to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. Sturgeon is charged with felony counts of receiving stolen property and criminal conspiracy. In addition, he is charged with a misdemeanor count of prohibited acts/possession of drug paraphernalia. why was it reported that he was carrying a concealed weapon at the time of the accident? obviously he had a legal permit since he was not charged for concealing without one. It should not be part of the report unless it is relevant to the crime. more ›
