Pine-Richland Operating on Two-Hour Delay Monday

The area remains under a winter weather advisory until 2 p.m.

The Pine-Richland School District is operating on a two-hour delay Monday after a spring snow storm coated the area overnight. The district will operate a modified kindergarten schedule, with morning kindergarten meeting from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. and afternoon kindergarten meeting from 2 to 3:45 p.m. St. Kilian Parish School in Cranberry and St. Gregory in Zelienople also have issued a two-hour delay for Monday. Nearly all of western Pennsylvania, including the Pine-Richland area, remains under a winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service until 2 p.m. tonight. UPDATED: National Weather Service Warns of Freezing Rain, Icy Roads in Pine-Richland

NWS issues winter weather advisory.

Expect freezing rain and ice accumulations of about a tenth of an inch on Friday. That's the word from the National Weather Service. It issued a winter weather advisory that is in effect from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. The freezing rain is expected to begin between 6 and 8 a.m. and end between 1 and 3 p.m. (These are updated times.) The National Weather Service warns of hazardous travel conditions because of ice-covered roads. Winds of 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph are also forecast. A winter weather advisory means freezing rain will cause travel difficulties.

Bitter Temperatures Linger in Pine-Richland, Around Pittsburgh as More Snow Arrives

The blast of cold air that has engulfed Western Pennsylvania in recent days is expected to bring snow showers.

The blast of cold air that has engulfed Western Pennsylvania over the past few days will linger a little longer and will bring more snow showers to boot. The National Weather Service is forecasting snow in the Pittsburgh area late Wednesday night and Thursday morning. There is also a chance of snow Friday afternoon. All the showers could bring 1 to 3 inches before the weekend. Temperatures will remain bitterly cold, with lows in the single digits on Thursday and wind chill values below 0. Kindergarten will operate on a modified schedule Wednesday, with morning sessions running from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. and afternoon sessions from 2 to 3:45 p.m. Pine-Richland schools did not have classes Tuesday due to a previously scheduled clerical day. Winter Weather Update: Is More Snow on the Way for New Year's Eve?

How should you dress for New Year's Eve? If you're planning to be outdoors that night, better bundle up and remember your boots. Same goes for New Year's Day.

Making plans for a New Year's celebration? Better dress for snow, especially if you plan to be outdoors after 7 p.m. on New Year's Eve or through the morning on New Year's Day. There's a chance folks around Western Pennsylvania will see snow fall before then, but the accumulation will be less than 2 inches through the day Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Moon Township.  Come Monday night, though, the weather service predicts we'll be likely to see more snow start to fall after 7 p.m.—around the time many of us will be heading out for First Night Downtown, fancy revelry elsewhere or a neighborhood bash. Winter Wonderland? Snow Showers to Continue, but Winter Storm Warning Expires

Winter storm warning to expire at 6 a.m. Thursday.

By the time most Pine-Richland residents get up Thursday morning, a winter wonderland will greet them and a winter storm warning will be over. The National Weather Service's warning—set to expire at 6 a.m.—means travel is dangerous because of the heavy snowfall. A light glaze of ice is also possible because of freezing drizzle, the NWS warned. Thursday could be a time for sled rides, building snowmen, snowball fights along with shoveling, snowblowing and salting. Interstate 79 was covered in snow, despite the snow plows' efforts to keep it clear.

Accidents were commonplace on Interstate 79 Wednesday as a winter storm covered the area in snow and sleet. These photos were taken of the southbound lanes of I-79 near mile marker 62, about 2 miles north of the Route 60 exit. The photographer is Christoper Cook, son of Patch Editor Richard Cook.
