On a quiet, snow-covered morning, we laid to rest a young man, Stephen P. Hudec. He was a great brother to Lauren, James and Hanna and a loving son to Sara and Steve. His mother weeps for her son, his father holds his children near, as they deal with the disease Stephen was trying so hard to beat ... addiction. Addiction will destroy you in ways you could never imagine. It eats at your soul, makes you do bad things and is there waiting in the darkness for that one weak moment to jump in and take over. The disease did this to Stephen, it intervened on his weakest moment and took his life at only 20 years old. Tyler Gazdik, 19, ordered to stand trial.
A Gibsonia teen served as a lookout and a distraction as his friend burglarized two homes on Ben Miller and Elgro roads in Richland Township in the latter half of 2012, according to testimony from a police detective Wednesday. Tyler Gazdik, 19, is charged with working with the late Stephen Hudec, 20, to burglarize those homes. He also told police he acted alone to take copper pipes and wire coils from a Grubbs Road home in Richland, Hampton Detective Robert Kirsopp testified. Magisterial District Judge William K. Wagner ordered Gazdik to stand trial on burglary, receiving stolen property, criminal conspiracy and criminal trespass charges. The cause and manner of death for a 20-year-old Richland man who was awaiting trial on multiple charges will not be determined for months, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office said Saturday. Stephen Hudec died Friday morning, just two days after waiving his preliminary hearing on 31 counts that included burglary; theft; loitering and prowling at night; receiving stolen property; and conspiracy. A 20-year-old Richland man is charged with going on a crime spree in the Pine-Richland area, breaking into homes and cars to steal thousands of dollars worth of electronics, a gun, cash and other items to support his drug addiction, according to court documents. Stephen Paul Hudec appeared Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge William K. Wagner for a preliminary hearing, but it was postponed for a week. He faces 32 charges—nine counts of burglary; 14 counts of theft; two counts of loitering and prowling at night; three counts of receiving stolen property; and four counts of criminal conspiracy. My heart aches for the hudec family. This horrible addiction has affected our family as well. We have a good family. I ask myself everyday what went wrong. What didn't I do? My faith has helped me in these dark times. Something needs to be changed with the way the government is handling people who are addicted to drugs. I believe rehab should be geared more to an individual not a one size fits … more ›
