The 13-year-old Pine-Richland singing sensation dishes on walking the red carpet, singing with José Carreras and plans for her next album.
It was on the Kean Quest stage five years ago that Mike Evancho first realized his daughter had a gift. “We thought she sounded pretty, but doesn’t every parent?” he said. Her performance at the popular local talent competition at the Kean Theatre in Richland was the first time Jackie Evancho, who at the time had just turned 8, ever sang in public. As she let loose a number from Phantom of the Opera, Mike Evancho recalled seeing jaws drop in the audience. “It kind of went from there,” he said. Jackie wound up coming in a first runner up in the contest, but soon started to receive requests to sing at events around the region, including at a Pittsburgh Pirates game. Carreras confirmed on his Facebook page that Jackie would be appearing as a special guest.
Jackie Evancho is scheduled to sing in Taiwan next month with Spanish tenor José Carreras. Carreras confirmed on his Facebook page that Jackie would be appearing as a special guest at the April 20 concert in Changhua. Carreras is known for his performances in Verdi and Puccini and as one of "The Three Tenors" with Luciano Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo. Last June, Jackie performed in a "Bouquet of the Opera" concert in Russia with opera singers Dmitri Hvorostovsky of Russia and Sumi Jo of South Korea. The 12-year-old singing sensation from Pine-Richland has also traveled to Britain and Japan, as well as sites across the U.S., to perform. Her fan base circles the globe. The 12-year-old prodigy is scheduled to appear on CBS's The Talk Wednesday afternoon as the tour to promote her new Songs From the Silver Screen CD moves into its second week. The Talk airs at 2 p.m. ET. Jackie appeared last week on ABC's The View, Fox & Friends and NBC's Today. Jackie Evancho will appear Friday on The View and Fox & Friends as she makes the TV rounds to promote her new Songs From the Silver Screen CD. The View airs at 11 a.m. ET and Fox & Friends at 6 a.m. ET. The classical crossover soprano sang "Music of the Night" when she appeared Tuesday on NBC's Today show. “It’s from my favorite movie, Phantom of the Opera, which is also the movie that inspired me to start singing,” Jackie told interviewer David Gregory. Jackie Evancho stands behind an old-fashioned movie projector as it whirs its old-timey sound, setting the mood for a video promoting her latest CD, Sounds From the Silver Screen. The 12-year-old's album, to be released Oct. 2, includes songs from legendary movies like Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Tangled, Titanic and South Pacific. The 'Great Performances' show will air Sunday in the Pittsburgh area.
In a lavish theater known for decades of performances by music legends, Jackie Evancho took the stage back in June to film her "Jackie Evancho: Music of the Movies" concert. That "Great Performances" special filmed at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles begins airing Saturday on PBS stations across the U.S. In the Pittsburgh area, it will air at 5:30 and 9:30 p.m. Sunday on WQED, and on other dates throughout August.
