Patch Poll: How Would You Rate the Region's Infrastructure?

Take our poll and give a grade to the roads, bridges and other parts of the public infrastructure.

The American Society of Civil Engineers has released its 2013 Report Card for America's Infrastructure. Every four years, the ASCE grades the nation, state by state, on the condition and performance of the nation’s infrastructure in the form of a school report card—assigning letter grades that are based on physical condition and needed fiscal investments for improvement. Put mildly, the country didn't do so well. America's GPA (grade point average) came in at a D+. The ASCE says some investment is needed to raise that GPA—an estimated $13.6 trillion by 2020. Pennsylvania fared a little better, earning a C- as its grade. The report card indicates the state has 852 high-hazard dams, 5,540 structurally deficent bridges and notes that 57 …

$1 Million Contract Awarded to Upgrade Intersections Near PRHS

Lane Construction Corp. was low bidder.

Traffic lights and lane improvements will be added to two intersections near Pine-Richland High School now that a $1 million contract has been awarded to Lane Construction Corp. of Bridgeville. The Pine-Richland School Board voted unanimously last week to award the bid. Traffic lights will be added in two spots: the school's entrance on Warrendale Road and at the three-way stop at Babcock Boulevard and Warrendale Road. The road improvements are part of the overall project to renovate and enlarge the high school at 700 Warrendale Road to alleviate crowding. A traffic signal and a right-turn lane will be installed at the high school's entrance on Warrendale Road. Another light will be installed where Warrendale Road intersects Babcock …

Poll: What is the Most Dangerous Intersection on Route 19 in Pine?

The heavily traveled road, also known as Perry Highway, is under construction.

We all know the trials and tribulations of driving on Route 19, also known as Perry Highway, in Pine Township. Construction is underway on the narrow four-lane road in the congested Wexford Flats area to make it wider and add a center turning lane. New, improved traffic signals will be added at eight intersections in the project area. Route 19 continues northwest of the project, past the Village at Pine and Pine Tree Shoppes developments. Do you travel this road daily? Only occasionally? Or do you avoid it altogether? Please take our poll to let us know where you think the most dangerous intersections are. Polling closes at 5 p.m. Thursday. We'll do a story on the results Friday. Have an opinion you'd like to voice about Route 19? Just …

Richland Residents Ask for Speed Deterrent on Forestwood Road

Speed limit is 25 mph, but motorists speed through residential neighborhood.

Orchard Park residents are asking for a third speed hump on Forestwood Drive to slow traffic in that residential neighborhood. The Richland Board of Supervisors met with some of those residents Wednesday evening as the officials took their spring "roads tour" throughout the township, viewing roads on which improvement projects are planned. Charlie Tea and other Forestwood residents said the speeding problem seems to be worse now that two speed humps are installed in the northern stretch of the road, close to its end at Community Center Drive. Tea and others who live in the 300 block of the road say they want a speed hump installed in front of their homes, which are on a sharp turn at the bottom of a steep hill that ends at Vineyard Drive. …

It appears that the Forestwood Dr. homeowners are another victim of what I call "the cut through" I am going to bet that the increased speeding is due to folks cutting thru the plan to get to Rt. 8 without being delayed along Rt8 by the traffic lights. That's not to say that their neighbors in the plan are not just as guilty of speeding thru, but that I have found that in other areas of Richland …   more ›

Route 28 To Close Briefly Very Early Saturday Morning

It should take just an hour to move a crane up the Route 28 southbound lanes in Millvale, PennDOT said.

Most of us will be sound asleep Saturday morning, but those who plan to travel Route 28 toward Pittsburgh need to know that (yet-another) road closing is planned. It should last only an hour starting at 4 a.m.,  according to a PennDOT press release. Crews will move a large crane up Route 28's southbound lanes, so traffic will be detoured across the 40th Street Bridge to Butler Street and then Liberty Avenue to the 16th Street Bridge. Access to the 40th Street Bridge and northbound Route 28 will remain open, PennDot said.   As always, PennDOT says: "Motorists are advised to use caution and allow extra time when traveling on Route 28." PennDOT also reminds motorists they can log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic …

Motorists Warned To Exercise Caution on Flooded Roads

Flooded roads? Turn around. Don't drown.

Flooded roads are reported throughout Allegheny County this morning as heavy rains combined with snow melt to create problems. "PennDOT reminds motorists that there is a chance of hydroplaning on wet roads and urges drivers to never attempt to drive through a flooded area of roadway or across downed power lines and trees," said PennDOT Press Officer Jim Struzzi in a statement. PennDOT encourages drivers to report any issues to 1-800-FIX-ROAD. "Water can be deeper than it appears, and water levels can rise very quickly. Most cars will float dangerously for at least a short while. A car can be buoyed by floodwaters and then swept downstream during a flood," Struzzi said in his press release. "Floodwaters also can erode roadways, and a …

Pine-Richland Schools Closed Tuesday

Snowstorm creates travel problems throughout area.

Pine-Richland schools are closed today as the area digs out from a snowstorm. Last night’s commute was a nightmare for motorists as cars slipped and slid on local roads and some cars were abandoned on highways. Minor accidents and disabled vehicles were reported in the Pine-Richland area. The speed limit was reduced on interstates, but that 45-mph speed limit reduction has been lifted this morning, according to PennDOT spokesman James B. Struzzi II. The snowfall set a record for Feb. 21 at 8.4 inches, shattering the 3-inch record set in 1929. Today’s forecast is for partly sunny weather with a high near 29 and a northeast wind between 7 and 10 mph, according to the National Weather Service. It is forecasting a chance of snow showers, …

Motorists Told to Stay Off Roads Because of Snow

Winter storm warning in effect.

A winter storm warning is in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday and motorists are warned to stay off the snowy, icy roads, according to the National Weather Service. An accumulation of 5 to 8 inches of snow is expected, with the heaviest snowfall occurring before midnight, the weather service said in a 7 p.m. statement. "A winter storm warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring," the weather service reported. "Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency." Snow, sleet and freezing rain moved into the area as temperatures dropped this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Potholes? Call 1-800-FIX-ROAD

PennDOT encourages motorists to report road problems.

Thud! Groan. The ugly sound of hitting a pothole, followed by the groan of wondering how much damage you just did to your car, leads to the question: Who will fix it and when? If it's a state road, PennDOT will. "With the freeze-thaw cycle taking its annual toll on pavement, PennDOT urges motorists to call 1-800-FIX-ROAD (1-800-349-7623) to report the location of potholes on state roads," according to a PennDOT press release.  "Once notified, PennDOT will work expeditiously to address concerns when weather permits; however, winter services remain the primary focus of maintenance crews at this time of year." PennDOT encourages callers to be specific when they call in about a pothole. "For state routes, callers must report the county, …
