New store will be on Route 8, south of Grandview Drive.
Mattress Firm will open a 4,200-square-foot showroom this spring in Richland Township. The Richland Board of Supervisors approved plans Wednesday night for the national retailer's store on Route 8 across from Grandview Crossing shopping center. The supervisors voted 4-0 to approve a preliminary and final land development plan for construction of a one-story building on the eastern side of Route 8, south of Grandview Drive. Zeden Jones, director of development for real estate developer United Growth, said construction will start soon and take four to five months. Architect Gerald G. Supervisors review the nominees on the "to-be-paved" roads list.
When I hear Road Tour, I think rock band and groupies. But Wednesday night's road tour with the Richland Board of Supervisors was a little less wild ... even though Township Manager Dean Bastianini was jokingly chided for driving too fast. Twice a year the supervisors pile into a couple of vehicles and tour certain roads in the township that are on a "to-be-paved" list. The good news is that none of the roads looked all that bad. Some have cracks that eventually will turn into potholes, but that's why they are on the list. We traveled 8 miles with the understanding that the supervisors will budget up to $1.2 million to contract with a private company to pave 5 miles. Budget sessions start in November. Richland Board of Supervisors approve four-year contract with Vogel Disposal.
The Richland Board of Supervisors talked trash Wednesday night and residents of the township saved money because of it. The supervisors voted 5-0 to award a $3.3 million contract to low bidder Vogel Disposal to collect trash and recycling from about 4,000 township customers. Recycling services will be expanded in that all plastics—No. 1-7—will be picked up. Currently, Vogel collects only plastics with the numbers 1 and 2. Under the new contract, effective Jan. 1, Richland Township residents will pay less for each of the next four years. Currently, Vogel charges $18.96 a month for basic collection. Richland supervisors vote unanimously on "blight" resolution.
It's official: The deteriorating property with crumbling greenhouses along Bakerstown Road in Richland Township that was once owned by Pittsburgh Cut Flower is a blighted area. The Richland Board of Supervisors made that pronouncement Wednesday night when it unanimously passed a resolution saying as much, opening the door for the nonprofit Allegheny Land Trust to apply for federal funds to improve the 180-acre property. Allegheny Land Trust has a contract to buy the property at 4136 Bakerstown Road/Red Belt on the northwestern part of Richland Township. The land is owned by Florida-based Legacy Landings LLC. Richland's Board of Supervisors approves preliminary plan to subdivide land into three lots.
Kusevich Properties L.P. plans to build a 25,000-square-foot flex-space building at the foot of Executive Drive in Richland Township. That is what owner George Kusevich explained to the Richland Board of Supervisors on Wednesday when he appeared before them seeking approval of a preliminary plan to subdivide his 17-acre property—Lot and Block No. 1505-S-104—into three lots. The supervisors unanimously approved the subdivision of the land, which is zoned "M" for light industry/manufacturing. It is bordered to the south by Alexander's Athletic Club, on the east by American Freightways and to the north and west by Chatham Manor and Richland Highlands residential developments. Richland Board of Supervisors OKs amendments to master plan.
Chatham University moved a little closer Wednesday night to transforming its Eden Hall campus. The Eden Hall master plan — which was approved in June — was amended to note changes in where buildings are placed and how parking lots are configured in the central portion of the campus. The Richland Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the changes to the master plan, as recommended by the township's planning commission. "This is the master plan that we approved (in June 2011)," said Supervisors Chairman Herbert Dankmyer before the vote. "They made some changes so we have to reapprove it." Chatham University's plans for the 388-acre Eden Hall campus have changed a bit since its master plan was approved. "We've done a lot of visioning," Sean Cryan of Mithun architectural firm told the Richland Board of Supervisors on Wednesday as he outlined the preliminary land development plan. The large iconic barn on the property will be transformed into an EcoCenter with an addition that parallels Ridge Road. The smaller dairy barn will be moved onto a more sturdy foundation and serve as a cafe with outdoor seating and library. An amphitheater will be tucked into a ravine near the barns.
