Air Force: 911th Airlift Wing Mission Secure Through 2014

The 911th Airlift wing in Moon will remain open for another year, but uncertainty remains.

The 911th Airlift Wing will keep its eight C-130 tactical aircraft through 2014, maintaining its full flying mission for one year.  Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, announced today that a planned 2013 closure of the base will not occur. Operations at the base will continue into next year, Murphy said in a statement.  The Air Force renewed the base's mission today. The 911th has faced previous closure attempts, including one in 2005. “The past 12 months aside, countless members of our community have been fighting since 2004 to block misguided and misinformed attempts to close the 911th," Murphy said in a statement. The 911th's mission after 2014 remains unclear. Murphy said efforts to stave off a closure have not ended. “Despite this …

U.S. Reps Altmire, Critz, Murphy, Kelly Accepted Contributions from NRA

Open Secrets has published a list of recipients of National Rifle Association campaign contributions for the 2012 House campaign.

U.S. Reps Tom Murphy (R-Upper St. Clair), Mark Critz (D-Johnstown), Jason Altmire (D-McCandless) and Mike Kelly (R-Butler) of Pennsylvania accepted thousands in 2012 campaign contributions from the National Rifle Association, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.  The NRA doled out more than $750,000 in campaign contributions in 2012, according to the center, a research organization that tracks money in politics and how it affects elections and policies and shares the information on OpenSecrets.org. The center obtained its data from the Federal Election Commission.  Fifteen members of Congress from Pennsylvania accepted contributions from the NRA during their 2012 bids for office, according to the center's list. Three of the top…

Not a fact at all. To vote against these people just because they took money from the NRA is saying you support what the crazed shooter in New Town Ct. did to those kids. Fact is that violent crime has gone down in this country as gun sales have skyrocketed in recent years. Another fact is that the Ct. Democrat legislature and Governor shot downa bill only a few months ago that would made it …   more ›

'Let Larry Vote' Petition Draws Attention to Problems With Voter ID Law

The Democratic congressional contender said he may not be able to vote because of the new law.

A candidate for Congress may not be able to vote this November because of Pennsylvania’s new voter ID law.  Washington County Commissioner Larry Maggi has a different name on his voter registration than he does on his driver’s license. His voter registration is listed as “Larry Maggi” while his driver’s license reads “Lawrence Owen Maggi.”  The Democratic nominee for Congress in Pennsylvania's 18th District is challenging the current congressman, Republican Tim Murphy. To raise awareness of how unprepared the state is to implement the new Voter ID law in less than 90 days, Maggi created www.letlarryvote.com to encourage others to sign his petition and demonstrate support for an injunction to delay the law’s implementation.  According to …

New facility will serve 160,000 military personnel and family members in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.

Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair.  The commissary will act as a grocery store and trading post exclusively for more than 160,000 military personnel and family members in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. It will replace the region's existing commissary in Oakdale.  The post is expected to be completed by October 2013. News Nearby: Fight to Save 911th Airlift Wing Arrives in Moon

Military supporters gathered at a rally to protest the Air Force's planned closure of the 911th Airlift Wing.

Hundreds of military supporters gathered Saturday on Airside Drive in Moon to protest the planned 2013 closure of the 911th Airlift Wing. Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, and Rep. Mark Critz, D-Johnstown, as well as members of Moon Township's Board of Supervisors were among those who gathered in Airport Cargo Building A to express opposition to the Air Force's decision to shutter the base. Despite its recently announced plans to close the Moon-based airlift wing, the Air Force has invested more than $58 million in infrastructure at the base in the past five years, according to Murphy's recent testimony before the House Armed Services Committee. The base will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sunday to mark the opening of Building 226, a …

Murphy: Air Force 'Doesn't Have the Data' to Close 911th Airlift Wing

Rep. Tim Murphy says military officials did not prepare a cost-analysis study before planning to close the 911th Airlift Wing.

Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, said military officials remained unmoved after a meeting in which he and other members of Pennsylvania's congressional delegation argued its cost-effectiveness and its value to Western Pennsylvania. Air Force officials are expected to provide lawmakers next week with data about civilian employees of the 911th and how the closing would affect them, Murphy said. The Air Force decided to shutter the base without conducting a cost-analysis study that would compare its operations to those at other air bases in the country, he said. The Air Force last week announced its plan to close the 911th as a part of an $8.7 billion initiative aimed at curbing federal defense spending. Other bases, including the 171st Refueling …

News Nearby: Moon-Area Leaders Vow to Fight Air Force Plan to Shutter 911th Airlift Wing

Despite Friday's announcement that the 911th Airlift Wing will close because of budget cuts, local and regional officials say they will work to keep the base open.

Lawmakers representing Moon and local leaders Friday vowed to fight a renewed effort by the U.S. Air Force to close the 911th Airlift Wing in Moon and move or retire its aircraft over the next two years. U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, said he will do everything in his power to keep the airlift wing open, arguing that closing it would not be fiscally responsible. Echoing that pledge was U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, D-McCandless, noting that closing the base and potentially shifting its troops and their families elsewhere would have a negative impact on Western Pennsylvania's economy. "I am extremely disappointed that the Air Force is considering closing the 911th Airlift Wing. I will do everything I can to ensure this facility remains…
