The May primary election is today. Do you know who your candidates are? Your vote will determine who advances to the general election held in the fall. While it’s not a presidential election year—when voters are most likely to turn out—there are plenty of reasons to exercise your right to vote. Local elections are of particular importance. These candidates are the people who will represent you when it comes to determining tax rates, drafting new ordinances and reviewing the businesses that enter the community. Incumbents Michael J. Dennehy, Jr., who is board chairman, and Edward Holdcroft are once again running for two open four-year seats on the Pine Township Board of Supervisors. Both are running on the Republican ticket. Because there …

Owner Scott Payne says the facility featuring a large indoor pool could be open by summer.
A new swimming school featuring a large, indoor heated pool is on its way in Pine Township. At Monday’s meeting, Pine’s Board of Supervisors unanimously approved plans for a Goldfish Swim School to be located off Lake Drive near the Wexford Plaza on Perry Highway. Owner Scott Payne, a Bradford Woods resident, said the 8,700-square-foot facility would be built from the ground up. It intends to feature a variety of swimming lessons for children, including those as young as 6 months. The building’s indoor 32-by-72-foot pool will be heated and will remain at 92 degrees year-round, Payne said. “It’s really, really cool,” he said. Founded by Michigan-based husband-and-wife team Jenny and Chris McCuiston in 2006, Goldfish Swim School now has …

Pine Board of Supervisors votes unanimously to approve plans for the huge complex.
Highmark Inc.'s Wexford Medical Mall got its final stamp of approval Monday from Pine Township's supervisors. The supervisors voted unanimously to approve Highmark's land development plan for the 174,000-square-foot facility that will cost nearly $100 million. It will be built along Route 19 beside North Way Christian Community. Highmark officials already held a groundbreaking ceremony in mid-December for the facility it describes as a "one-stop shop for all of your health-care needs". The ceremony came a few days after Pine Township's planning commission—an advisory body to the supervisors—recommended approval of the project. Construction of the medical mall at 12311 Perry Highway (Route 19) will be completed in summer 2014, Highmark …
Michael Dennehy Jr. remains chairman and Philip Henry is vice chair.
When the Pine Board of Supervisors chose its chairman and vice chair for the coming year, it was deja vu all over again, as baseball great Yogi Berra would say. The supervisors voted unanimously Monday to re-elect Michael Dennehy Jr. as chairman and Philip Henry as vice chairman. They also voted to retain Cheryl Fischer as the township's manager and Gary Gushard of Tucker Arensberg PC as the township solicitor. Here are other positions the supervisors voted unanimously to approve: Township Engineer—Lennon, Smith, Souleret Engineering Inc. for general engineering; Herbert, Rowland & Grubic Inc. for transportation engineering; and K.L.H. Engineers for consulting engineering. Emergency Management Coordinator—Scott D. Anderson reappointed. …

Plan calls for single-family homes on Mount Pleasant Road.
Pleasant Ridge—a 43-lot planned residential development in Pine Township—is a step closer to construction. The Pine Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to grant revised final approval for the development of single-family homes on Mount Pleasant Road near Franklin Road, at the Butler-Allegheny county line. Pine Ridge Commons LP is the developer and Ryan Homes will be the builder. Larry Kurpakus, director of code administration and land development, said the 53-acre Pleasant Ridge planned residential development was granted tentative approval with conditions in May 2007, but Allegheny County denied recording the plan because several lots crossed township and county lines. The modified plan reduces the number of approved lots from…

A number of local politicians made appearances at the festivities at Pine Community Park.
As the sun came out on the festivities at Pine Community Day on Saturday, so did the politicians. House Majority Leader Mike Turzai, R-Bradford Woods, is a mainstay at community days and once again he was the man with the microphone for the watermelon-eating and pie-eating contests. He invited his colleague, Rep. Randy Vulakovich, R-Shaler, to join him in his emceeing and judging duties. Vulakovich is running for the 40th senatorial district seat vacated by Jane Orie, who was convicted and sentenced to prison for using her state-paid staff to do campaign work. Democrat Sharon Brown opposes him in the Aug. 7 special election. U.S. Rep. Mark Critz, D-12th District, and Republican Keith Rothfus also were making the rounds, meeting potential …
