Westinghouse to Lay Off 665 Across the Globe

Spokesman Vaughn Gilbert said the layoffs would not be targeted to one location, including the Westinghouse headquarters in Cranberry.

Blaming a global economic downturn and less demand for nuclear products, Westinghouse Electric Co. is whittling its workforce for the second time in less than a year. Westinghouse spokesman Vaughn Gilbert said the company on Tuesday informed employees that it would eliminate 665 positions worldwide. The number constitutes about 5 percent of the company’s workforce of 13,300 employees in 17 countries, Gilbert said. He noted the eliminations include open positions that have not been filled. Gilbert did not know how the layoffs would affect employees at the Westinghouse headquarters in Cranberry. What Do You Do with a Historic Atom Smasher?

With the Westinghouse site sold to a developer, the atom smasher needs a new use or a new home.

The iconic blue "W" within a circle that was the Westinghouse logo is a bit faded. The odd, pear-shaped metal structure a bit weathered. And its future uncertain at best. It was on the hill above Ardmore Boulevard, nestled between Chalfant and the "lettered" avenues plan in Forest Hills, where the world's first industrial Van de Graaff atom smasher made history in 1937—and Westinghouse Electric and the nation became a dominant force in nuclear energy. The Forest Hills landmark, which smashed its last atom in 1958, is one of 50 historical "milestones" listed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
