Pittsburgh Pirates star Neil Walker and GM vice-president Don Johnson are two of the notable figures taking part in the week-long celebration.
After months of construction, Tom Henry Chevrolet along Route 8 in Bakerstown is celebrating the grand opening of its new showroom and service center with a plethora of events involving Pine-Richland students—and even the vice-president of General Motors. “It’s going to be pretty cool,” said Tom Henry, owner of the car dealership. Henry said he decided to partner with the Pine-Richland Opportunities Fund for the celebration because of his family’s close affiliation with the district. Henry’s wife, Gail, is a pianist for the high school chorus and their children either graduated from or still attend Pine-Richland. Celebrating All Week Long From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 4, a vintage car show will be held outside the new 32,000 square…

Former Pittsburgh Pirates trainer Frank Velasquez and physical therapist Aimee Slattery, who worked with WWE athletes, team up for a sports rehabilitation and performance clinic.
Although both had careers working with professional athletes, it was a chance encounter that led Aimee Slattery to Frank Velasquez. Slattery, who previously worked with the WWE in the orthopedic and sports medicine arena, was taking a yoga class at the Baierl Family YMCA in Franklin Park when she struck up a conversation with Velasquez’s wife, Carrie Velasquez. After recently moving with her family to Wexford from New York, Slattery said she was looking for someplace new to apply her skills as a physical therapist. As Carrie Velasquez explained it to her on that fateful day, so was her husband. A former strength and conditioning coach with the Pittsburgh Pirates who worked with the organization from 2003 until 2011, Velasquez—who didn't …

Neil Walker—at the ripe old age of 26—is a Hall of Famer. The former Pine-Richland High School star athlete, who now plays for the Pittsburgh Pirates, was named Thursday to the WPIAL Hall of Fame. The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League announced its 2012 Hall of Fame class at a news conference Thursday morning, according to a report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Here is the bio listed on the WPIAL Hall of Fame site: NEIL WALKER, PINE-RICHLAND HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2004 You know him as the second baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates, but Neil Walker also was one of the WPIAL’s best all-around athletes during his days at Pine-Richland. His friends jokingly nicknamed him “God” at Pine-Richland, and he did everything but walk …

Varsity, JV and alumni games to be played on North Park ice rink.
Pittsburgh Pirate and Pine-Richland alum Neil Walker will be at center ice to drop the puck Monday night for "The Ice Storm," a game that pits Pine-Richland against rival North Allegheny at the North Park Ice Rink. This is a rare opportunity to see the high schools face off: They don't play each other in league games because NA is AAA and P-R is at the AA level. The varsity game starts at 8 p.m.; it is preceded by a 5 p.m. JV game and a 6:30 p.m. alumni game. Tickets are $5 for all three games; children under 12 get in for free. Y108's Stoney Richards will be the announcer. The National Anthem will be sung by Maddie Ince from Pine-Richland Middle School and Leah Griffin from North Allegheny High School. Both girls are sisters of varsity …
