Pine-Richland Grad Brandon Saad a Finalist for NHL's Calder Trophy

The winner will be announced during the Stanley Cup finals.

Pine-Richland graduate and Chicago Blackhawks left wing Brandon Saad is one of the three finalists for the Calder Trophy, given to the NHL's top rookie. According to WTAE-TV, Saad ranked fifth among rookies in each of the three major scoring categories - goals (10), assists (17) and points (27). The winner will be announced during the Stanley Cup finals. The other two candidates are Montreal Canadiens right wing Brendan Gallagher and Florida Panthers center Jonathan Huberdeau. Gallagher played in 44 games, ranking second among rookies with 15 goals and fourth with 28 points. Huberdeau played in all 48 games for Florida and ranked second both on the team and among NHL rookies with 31 points (14 goals, 17 assists). Among first-year players, …

Brandon Saad 'Likely' to Suit Up with Chicago Blackhawks Against Coyotes

Winger Daniel Carcillo's injury could mean more playing time for the former Pine-Richland hockey star.

Rookie forward Brandon Saad, inactive as a healthy scratch, watched his Chicago Blackhawks teammates win their season-opening game Saturday in Los Angeles and ruin the Kings' pregame re-enactment of their Stanley Cup celebration from last summer. One night later, the former Pine-Richland hockey star is expected to play for the Blackhawks. Because of a third-period leg injury to feisty Blackhawks winger Daniel Carcillo, Chicago coach Joel Quenneville told the Chicago Tribune he anticipates that he "likely" would suit up the rookie Saad in Carcillo's spot Sunday night in Phoenix. The coach added that Carcillo, who needed ACL surgery a year ago and on Saturday was playing his first game since the Jan. 17, 2012 operation, "is going to miss …
