KDKA: Family Speaks Out About Mental Illness of Man Accused of Killing Grandmother

Johnston family does not want grandmother's death to be in vain, KDKA reports.

The family of a 26-year-old Richland man charged with killing his grandmother spoke out Tuesday about his mental illness in an exclusive interview with KDKA. Levi Daniel Staver was charged with criminal homicide a week ago, Feb. 19, after he stabbed his grandmother, Connie Johnston, in the back as she sat at the kitchen table eating breakfast with his grandfather, according to police. Staver told police an archangel told him to stab her, according to the criminal complaint. The grandmother's husband, the Rev. David Johnston, and daughter Ruth said they wanted to raise awareness about mental illness so Connie Johnston's death is not in vain, KDKA reports. Hearing Postponed for Richland Man Charged With Killing Grandmother

Levi Staver is charged with criminal homicide.

The preliminary hearing for Levi Daniel Staver, who is charged with stabbing his grandmother to death at their Richland Township home, has been postponed. Originally scheduled for Friday, the hearing has been postponed until June 7 before Judge Donna Jo McDaniel, according to court documents. Staver, 26, is in the Allegheny County Jail; his bail request was denied. Staver stabbed his grandmother in the back Tuesday morning as she and his grandfather were sitting at the kitchen table eating breakfast, Northern Regional Police Chief T. Robert Amman said. Constance Johnston Remembered as 'Guiding Hand' to Husband's Congregation

The 76-year-old was stabbed to death Tuesday morning and her grandson is charged with criminal homicide.

As funeral arrangements are made for Constance Johnston, a picture emerges of a woman who was always there for others and served as "a guiding hand" to Lifeline Community Church where her husband was the pastor. The 76-year-old Gibsonia woman died Tuesday after being stabbed in the back while eating breakfast with her husband, the Rev. David Johnston, at their home in the 3900 block of Gibsonia Road (Route 910), according to Northern Regional Police Chief T. Robert Amann. The 26-year-old Richland man charged with killing his grandmother told police he was sitting at the computer in his bedroom when the archangel directed him to “kill the witch”, according to a criminal complaint. Levi Daniel Staver is charged with criminal homicide for Tuesday’s stabbing death of his grandmother, Constance Johnston, at their Richland Township home. According to the criminal complaint, Staver told detectives that he made the sign of the cross, got dressed like a soldier, took a sword and said, “This thing has got to go”.
