You Be the Critic: Who Do You Think Should Win an Oscar?

Have you seen any of the movies up for Academy Awards? Check out our recap of the nominees and then tell us who you think should win.

It’s that time of year again, and by that we mean nominations have been made for Hollywood’s own Super Bowl—the Academy Awards.  This year’s nominees, announced Thursday morning by funnyman Seth MacFarlane and actress Emma Stone, include Lincoln, which had the most nominations at 12, and Les Miserables, which has nine nominations. Surprisingly, there was no best director nod for Ben Affleck for his critically acclaimed film Argo, which is nominated for seven awards, including Best Picture. The movie will compete alongside Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty in that category. Similar directing shutouts occurred for other highly praised …

Diary of an 'American Idol' Audition Mom

It's a long, hot road to fame. Or not.

When my son Jeff heard the American Idol auditions were coming to Pittsburgh, there was no question of whether or not he was going to try out -- he's been talking about doing so since he turned 16. Because he's under 18, he had to be accompanied by a parent at all times, and I would never have missed being with him for such an exciting day.  Here is how it all went: Wednesday, July 13 at 3:30 p.m. - You have to register before attending auditions, and registration is scheduled for the 48 hours before auditions start. We had heard that thousands lined up first thing in the morning, but you could just walk up to a table if you went after that. True. We had our tickets and wristbands without even having to stand in line. Friday, July 15 at 4 …

I attended one of the performances and thought, WOW, things have come along way since I was in Richland High school during the olden days. (1976). Especially well, most everything. I hope the production and the cast/crew win big. They deserve it. That was a difficult selection to bring to the stage and they all did such a great job. The performers who played the Inn Keeper and his wife were made …   more ›

"Les Miserables" a Hit

Pine-Richland High School musical is an amazing production.

There is a reason that Pine-Richland High School musicals are nominated year after year for Gene Kelly Awards – they deserve them. Their latest production, "Les Miserables," is no exception. In Friday's opening night show, the cast performed  “I Dreamed a Dream," “On My Own” and other songs made famous by "Les Miserables." "Les Miserables" is known as a difficult musical, but you would never have known that based on the students’ performance Friday night before a packed audience. The musical isn’t what one would call uplifting, with a somber story line set in the mid-1800s in France. Jean Valjean is the main character, a man sentenced to prison for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. The story follows Jean Valjean’s journey once he is …

Broadway Director Jeff Calhoun Gives Advice to Hometown Students

Richland High School alumnus visits with students at Pine-Richland High School.

It was a typical high school scene, a bunch of students sitting around, sharing ideas and giving each other advice. Except one of those sharing ideas and tips was an award-winning Broadway director, although you would never have known it from his demeanor or attitude. That is exactly what makes Jeff Calhoun so loved by the students at Pine-Richland High School. “He acts like one of us. He doesn’t talk down to us, but treats us like equals, like friends,” said Katelyn Alcook, a senior at the school.   It was an exciting day for many students at Pine-Richland High School when they met Thursday with Calhoun. The 1978 graduate of Richland High School visited with students, teachers and staff, “paying back” to the place that gave him his roots…

Broadway Director and Choreographer Jeff Calhoun Returns to Roots

Richland High School grad to visit this week, take in spring musical.

It’s a homecoming of sorts when Broadway director and choreographer Jeff Calhoun returns to Pine-Richland High School this week. Calhoun, a 1978 graduate of Richland High School, will be meeting Thursday with students, presenting senior honors awards and taking in the high school’s musical, "Les Miserables." It is a visit that has become annual for Calhoun since he returned for the 50th anniversary of the district in 2008. To his surprise, the school district honored him by inducting him into its Alumni Hall of Fame at the anniversary celebration. Calhoun was planning simply to announce creation of a $5,000 scholarship at the festivities.  “Originally, it was to go to a student who would be pursing a career in the theater arts, but that …
