Monday Is Fish-for-Free Day in Pennsylvania

No license is required on Labor Day to fish in the state's waterways.

Families and friends visiting Pennsylvania's popular outdoor spots, such as North Park Lake or the Monongahela River, this holiday weekend can enjoy a day of free fishing, thanks to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3, marks the second of the state's two free fishing days of 2012 when no fishing license is required. Fish-for-Free Days allow anyone—residents and non-residents—to legally fish in Pennsylvania from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. All other fishing regulations apply. The year's earlier Fish-for-Free Day was Memorial Day, May 28. "Fish-for-Free days are a convenient way to introduce friends and family to the sport of fishing," Fish and Boat Commission Executive Director John Arway said. "Many families …

Hurricane and Refinery Fire Spiking Pine-Richand Area Gas Prices

Experts say prices could rise a dime or more a gallon in coming days.

Nothing like a like a hurricane in the gulf of Mexico, a refinery fire in Venezuela, and an upcoming holiday weekend to create the perfect storm for higher gasoline prices. Nationwide, gasoline prices rose a half-cent a gallon to $3.756 on average for regular unleaded, AAA reported.  "As of Tuesday afternoon four major refineries, totaling more than 1 million barrels per day of refining capacity, have announced their planned closure.  These refineries make up about half of the production capacity in the region where Hurricane Isaac is expected to make landfall," said Michael Green, Manager, AAA Public Relations. Add to that, a deadly explosion and fire at Venezuela's largest oil refinery, and some experts predict price hikes of 5 to 15 …

Job Market Dampens Labor Day Parade

Despite rain, thousands flock Downtown to march in or watch one of the nation's largest Labor Day parades.

Labor Day's Significance Remains Strong for Some Workers, Less So for Others

Amid parades and end-of-summer picnics, how much does the holiday resonate today in Western Pennsylvania?

Growing up in the North Hills in the 1970s, Margaret Ward Robbibaro loved Labor Day. Although she admits she didn’t think much about the traditional meaning of the holiday, she knew what it meant to her. “Labor Day cushioned the dread of going back to school,” said Robbibaro, 46, of Ohio Township. “You have those few days of having to be back in school, and then Labor Day would come. It was a summer vacation encore.” The holiday began in 1892 with a parade of carpenters in New York City. President Grover Cleveland probably was not thinking about giving kids one last summer fling when he made it official two years later, declaring the first Monday of September a holiday for working men. In the decades since, unions unofficially claimed the…
