Wondering how to entertain the relatives now that the presents have been opened and the holiday meal is a memory? How about Kennywood? More than 1 million dazzling lights and displays are illuminating Kennywood Park for the holiday season. Kennywood Holiday Lights will run from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, through Dec. 30. These rides are open during Holiday Lights: Gingerbread Express (Olde Kennywood RR), Merry-Go-Round, Paratrooper, Kangaroo, Ghostwood Estate (with a special holiday theme), Turtle, Auto Race, and up to nine Kiddieland rides. Raccoon State Park tied with pontoon boats at Moraine State Park for second place.
That old ad slogan, "Kennywood: The Great Escape," must still be resonating with people in western Pennsylvania. Congratulations to Kennywood Park, which captured 35 percent of the vote to win last week's "Where's Your Favorite Staycation?" in our Patch Readers' Choice contest. Raccoon State Park tied for second place with pontoon boats at Moraine State Park —each got 20 percent of the vote. With the economy tight, we want your suggestions for the best place in western Pennsylvania to take a staycation.
We all know the economy is tough nowadays, so we at Patch are suggesting ways for families to enjoy a summer vacation on the cheap. There are plenty of places to have a great summer vacation without spending a ton of money. You can visit Kennywood, ride the bike trails, spend a day at the trolley museum, relax at the local park, take in an auto race, ride a boat or hit some golf balls. We're calling it the Patch Staycation! And we want to know where your favorite local place is to spend a weekend without spending a lot of money. The amusement park is close to inking a deal for a beer garden.
Riders at Kennywood Park may soon be able to down some liquid courage before hopping on the amusement park’s more daring rides. At a public hearing Wednesday, West Mifflin officials approved a liquor license transfer from a closed McKeesport restaurant to Kennywood, the Tribune Review reports. If the Liquor Control Board approves the transfer, the family-friendly amusement park could begin selling beer in a designated “beer garden” by June. According to the Trib’s report, Kennywood officials said they had a positive response from guests when beer was sold at the park during two weekends in September for Oktoberfest events and requests for the sale of beer have increased over the years. Two Pine-Richland football teammates keep cool heads to get everyone out of their flooded car.
A trip to Kennywood for Pine-Richland Day turned into a ride more harrowing than any at the amusement park Friday afternoon when floodwaters started to fill the car in which four Pine-Richland residents were riding. Barb Troutman of Bakerstown was driving her 2-year-old daughter Riley Beck, 16-year-old son Leroy Troutman, and his friend Nick Berus to the West Mifflin park when the heavy rain made them decide to turn around and head back home. The boys were getting on the road late because they had spent the morning at football camp at Pine-Richland High School. Their route took them down Washington Boulevard in Pittsburgh just as it started to flood. “It happened pretty quickly,” said Barb Troutman. The boys said they saw water rushing by …
