Female patients accuse rheumatologist of inappropriately touching their breasts.
Dr. Thomas Tyma, the Wexford rheumatologist who has been charged with inappropriately touching female patients, faced his 18th accuser Wednesday at a preliminary hearing. The woman testified that Tyma briefly touched her left breast as he finished up an examination while she was in UPMC Passavant Hospital -- McCandless last year. Magisterial District Judge William Wagner ordered Tyma to stand trial on the indecent assault charge, sending the case to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. A formal arraignment is set for June 1. Tyma, 54, of Sewickley has pleaded not guilty. His attorney, Stanton D. Altogether 17 women have testified that the Wexford rheumatologist touched them inappropriately.
Two more women testified Friday that Dr. Thomas Tyma touched them inappropriately during examinations, bringing to 17 the number of women who have testified against the Wexford rheumatologist. After a half hour of testimony and arguments, Magisterial District Judge Regis Welsh Jr. ordered Tyma to stand trial in Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. A formal arraignment is scheduled for May 26. Friday's preliminary hearing brought to three the number of hearings over which Welsh has presided since January regarding the 54-year-old doctor, who is a Sewickley resident. Fourteen women have accused Dr. Thomas Tyma of inappropriately touching them.
Two more women have stepped forward with allegations against Dr. Thomas Allen Tyma, bringing to 14 the number of alleged victims who say he touched them inappropriately, police said. Northern Regional Police Chief Robert Amann said all the accusations are similar in nature. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 11 before Magisterial District Judge Regis Welsh. Tyma, who practiced at Allegheny North Arthritis Center in Wexford, was arrested Jan. 11 at his office at 150 Lake Drive after a 31-year-old Butler woman went to the Northern Regional Police Department and reported the initial accusation.
