Some Pennsylvania college campuses are allowing students to carry more than just their books.
At least five Pennsylvania state-owned universities are now allowing guns on campus after the state’s lawyers concluded that an outright ban on weapons was probably unconstitutional, according to KDKA-TV. Weapons at five universities--Kutztown, Shippensburg, Edinboro, Slippery Rock and Millersville--are now allowed on campus, though they are still generally banned from school buildings and athletic events, KDKA reported. Students with concealed-carry permits had questioned the constitutionality of blanket weapons bans at state-owned universities, prompting a legal review that found such bans were vulnerable to court challenge. In the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, two major retailers are pulling the plug on sales of certain semi-automatic weapons nationwide. Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the world, has suspended sales of some semi-automatic rifles from all stores. The company, which is headquartered in Moon Township, also has removed all guns from its chain closest to Newtown, CT. In a statement, the store said it ordered the move out of respect for the victims and families of Newtown. Coffee retailer joins Microsoft, Nike in support of gay marriage.
Some religious and political groups are urging Starbucks customers to grab their morning coffee elsewhere in light of the company's support of gay marriage and its policy on guns. USA Christian Ministries, a group boycotting Starbucks for its recent support of gay marriage in the state of Washington, said in a news release that the coffee chain's decision has angered Christians. "Christians are upset with Starbucks for turning against God," said Steven Andrew, president of USA Christian Ministries.
