Gov. Corbett: Too Early To Tell if Funding for Mental Health Treatment Will Increase

Corbett, while visiting St. Barnabas' Crystal Conservatories for a Presents for Patients event, also speaks about the fiscal cliff and Pennsylvania's budget.

Gov. Tom Corbett—who called for more attention to mental illness in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings—would not commit Thursday to increased funding for mental health treatment. The governor said it is too early in the budget process to commit to increasing or decreasing funding for anything. His remarks came during  a press conference at St. Barnabas' Crystal Conservatories in Valencia after a Presents for Patients presentation. Last week, the governor stressed the need to look at mental illness as reporters at a press conference pressed him on whether he would support an assault weapons ban. Pine-Richland Schools Looking at $672,800 Cut in State Funding

School board's finance committee discusses budget at 5:30 meeting tonight.

A preliminary look at education cuts proposed yesterday by Gov. Tom Corbett shows Pine-Richland School District can expect at least a $672,800 decrease in state funding, according to figures provided by the district. "With all of the news coverage lately regarding the governor's budget, we were fully expecting reductions in our state funding," said Dana Siford, director of finance and school services. Pine-Richland School Board adopted a $65 million preliminary budget in February that assumed about $12 million in revenue from the state. The proposed cut represents about 1 percent of the total preliminary budget. The board's finance committee meets at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the budget at the district's administration building at 702 …

Corbett keeps promise of no new taxes or fees, including those on Marcellus shale drilling. Education funding takes a major hit.

Gov. Tom Corbett unveiled a $27.3 billion proposed budget for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania today. Corbett's budget plan calls for drastic cuts to many areas, including basic education, which is being reduced by approximately $500 million. Corbett also called for school districts to "to hold the line" even if it means a pay freeze for school employees. State-related universities were also hit with substantial cuts. The University of Pittsburgh and Penn State University would see their state funding essentially halved. Corbett also called for no taxing of the extraction of natural gas from Marcellus Shale areas in an effort to "make Pennsylvania the hub of this [natural-gas] boom." What are your thoughts?
