Connor Finley reaches out to people who have been bullied.
Connor Finley knows what it is like to be bullied and feels the angst of others who deal with bullies. The Pine-Richland High School senior thinks someone should stand up against bullying—so he has. In September 2011, Connor started the It Gets Better Project—Stand for No Bullying with a Facebook page that now has more than 600 members. Its mission is "to stop bullying in the world and in our school ..." with a goal of getting more people to join and see that bullying can be stopped, according to the page's mission statement. Connor said the Facebook page is a place "for people to release their feelings." "Just be yourself. It doesn't matter who you are. It matters that you are alive on this earth," Connor said. Among the diverse posts, a …

State Rep. Jesse White introduced legislation to ban the practice because he said it is an invasion of fundamental privacy rights.
State Rep. Jesse White is seeking to prohibit employers from requiring social media users to reveal user names and passwords as a condition of employment. White said he has introduced legislation—H.B. 2332—to ban the practice because he said it is an invasion of fundamental privacy rights. "The widespread use of Facebook and Twitter has opened a whole new can of worms in the employment sector and allows companies to snoop in their employees' personal lives like never before," said White, D-Cecil. "But, employers should not be abusing the tight job market to put employees or prospective employees in an uncomfortable situation where they are forced to 'friend' the company by giving away personal details about themselves and others." The …

The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office and the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese are investigating amidst Facebook allegations.
The priest at St. James Church has taken a leave of absence during an ongoing investigation from the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office involving Facebook messages to a minor, according to the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese. Pittsburgh Catholic Bishop David Zubik said in a letter posted on the parish's website that a complaint was recently made against the Rev. Dan Valentine regarding Facebook postings that the St. James priest made to a minor. “As a result of the complaint, I directed my staff to share all information with the office of the District Attorney of Allegheny County,” Zubik wrote in a letter that was read to parishioners Sunday. Zubik said the DA’s office informed the diocese that while the postings were "a matter of …

Thirty years after her unsolved murder, Christine Guenther is still on many people’s minds.
A woman sits in a crowded chapel, in the company of family, friends and strangers. She glances at the floor and notices a single autumn leaf. As the congregation progresses past her to receive the sacrament, their shuffling feet stir the leaf, causing it to spin and dance. At the conclusion of communion, the leaf rests so that its tip points at the woman, and she is reminded of another autumn leaf she saw three decades ago—a leaf pursed between the lips of her teenaged daughter, whose body was discovered buried under foliage following her murder. That woman is Carmen Mader, formerly Guenther. Her daughter’s name was Christine, and this year marks the 30-year anniversary of Christine’s unsolved murder. Fifteen-year-old Christine Guenther …

Do you know the passwords to your children's social media accounts?
I have a 15-year-old who is going to be a sophomore in high school this year. She is a very mysterious creature. She spends hours behind the closed door of her room, listening to music, being on the computer, texting and talking on the phone with friends. She could be talking about boys, or she could be looking up the details of a Sewickley-area flash mob, for all I know. A friend of mine said she has the passwords to any and all email and social networking accounts for her children. Another friend forbids her children to have Facebook accounts. I held out as long as possible for my daughter to get a cell phone, and it was only because of convenience that I gave her uncle the green light to buy her one as a gift. When I was thinking about…

At age 10, she wowed the judges, audience and world on 'America's Got Talent.'
As if we could forget, Jackie Evancho's father posted this reminder on Facebook Wednesday: It was one year ago today that Jackie made her first national television appearance on America's Got Talent and captured the hearts of all that heard her. What a year it's been!! -mike- The little girl with the great big voice sang O Mio Babbino Caro to an audience that started applauding just 15 seconds into the performance and to judges who gushed their impressions after giving her a standing ovation. Here is a recap of the reaction the 10-year-old from Richland Township got after that debut performance: Host Nick Cannon: Wow! ... I'm waiting for the lady to come out who was really singing that. That was your voice? A smiling Jackie: Yup, that was …
