Pine-Richland residents are being asked to give their opinions Monday at a focus group discussion about hiring a new schools superintendent. The former superintendent, Dr. Mary Bucci, resigned after the Pine-Richland School Board voted not to renew her contract at the end of June 2013. Dr. David Foley has been tapped to serve as Pine-Richland School District's interim superintendent starting Jan. 9. The assistant superintendent is filling the shoes left empty by Dr. Mary Bucci, who resigned her post effective Jan. 8 after the Pine-Richland School Board notified her that it would not renew her contract when it expired June 30. Police officers greeted Pine-Richland schoolchildren Monday morning, but otherwise the students' day was fairly routine. Assistant Superintendent Dr. David Foley told the Pine-Richland School Board on Monday evening that Northern Regional Police officers came to the schools to alleviate fears on their first day in classes after the mass school shooting in Newtown, CT. Police will continue to have a presence at the schools, Foley said after the meeting. He did not elaborate on specifics, citing security reasons. The technology company servicing Pine-Richland School District is getting the word out about its work through YouTube and five of its promotional videos star the district's superintendent and assistant superintendent. Superintendent Dr. Mary Bucci and Assistant Superintendent Dr. David Foley speak about the district's technological problems and demands and how VARtek provided a "total solution." When it comes to test scores, the news is good for Pine-Richland schools. Assistant Superintendent Dr. David Foley told the school board Monday night that Pine-Richland students did well on the SATs and Keystone Algebra 1 tests. I think Dr. Foley did an excellent job of communicating to the parents/guardians about the school district's response to this tragedy. I felt a little more confident sending my daughter to school on Monday. I already see a change in the administration, now that Dr. Bucci is 'on vacation'.
