Since Dick’s Sporting Goods closed its location in the Cranberry Square complex off Route 19 in October and moved to a new, two-story building in the Cranberry Crossroads shopping center on Route 228, there have been numerous rumors regarding what would—and should—occupy the former space, including an L.A. Fitness. Well, the rumors can safely be laid to rest. Dick’s Sporting Goods has submitted a building permit application to renovate the vacated space into a new sporting goods concept store called Field & Stream, according to Cranberry Township’s business hub. In the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, two major retailers are pulling the plug on sales of certain semi-automatic weapons nationwide. Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the world, has suspended sales of some semi-automatic rifles from all stores. The company, which is headquartered in Moon Township, also has removed all guns from its chain closest to Newtown, CT. In a statement, the store said it ordered the move out of respect for the victims and families of Newtown. Located in the Cranberry Crossroads plaza along Route 228, the two-story, freestanding store opens its doors Wednesday. An official launch, including a ribbon-cutting ceremony, will be held at 8 a.m. Friday.
