Cranberry Remembers: Firefighters Dedicate 9/11 Memorial

Hundreds of people gather in front of the Park Fire Station in Cranberry for the unveiling of a memorial dedicated to the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

On a Tuesday in Cranberry, the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Twin Towers rose again. Placed atop two granite slabs shaped like the World Trade Center buildings, and situated north and south—just as they were in New York City—was an 832-pound piece of twisted steel that fell from one of the towers on Sept. 11. Hundreds of people were there to salute it. “It’s a great way to honor those who’ve passed,” said Jeff Schueler, Cranberry’s public safety director. Just in time for Patriot Day, the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company held a formal dedication Tuesday for its 9/11 Memorial. Area residents, local officials and the township’s first responders all attended the event. Speaking to the crowd, Jeff …

Most everyone who is old enough can remember where they were and what they were doing when the first of two planes struck the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. Now they can touch a piece from the day’s wreckage. Just in time for Patriot Day, the 11th anniversary of the attacks, the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company is holding a formal dedication of its 9/11 Memorial at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Park Station on Route 19. The public is welcome to attend the event, which also will feature the area’s other first responders.  The memorial itself is structured around an 832-pound piece of twisted steel that fell from one of the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11. News Nearby: Cranberry Firehouse Subs to Open Monday

The sub shop will feature memorabilia from the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company.

In May, Cranberry Patch asked readers what business they’d like to see at the former Original DiCarlo’s Famous Pizza, which shut its doors in The Streets of Cranberry last fall. More than a few readers responded a Firehouse Subs would be a perfect fit for the location. Wish granted. The specialty sandwich shop officially opens for business Monday in the shopping plaza. Part of a franchise founded close to two decades ago in Jacksonville, FL, by former firefighter brothers Robin and Chris Sorensen, Firehouse Subs serves up a variety of hot and cold subs in a fast casual environment. In the case of the hot subs, the customers’ chosen meats are “steamed” before being placed on toasted bread. The restaurant’s No. 1 seller is the “Hook & Ladder…

News Nearby: Cranberry Firefighter Golf Outing Raises Money Needed for 9/11 Memorial

The fire company should have the monument complete by Sept. 11 2012.

After a successful day of golf, the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company is another step closer to erecting a monument in memory of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. On Wednesday, the company held its first ever golf outing at the Cranberry Highlands Golf Course. The cost to golf was $125 per person, or $500 for a foursome, with proceeds benefitting the 9/11 memorial project. Fire company President Bruce Hezlep said the outing—including a $5,000 donation from MSA in Cranberry—raised about $17,000 for the monument, which will be located in front of the Park Fire Station on Route 19.   “The support from the community has been just overwhelming,” Hezlep said. About 87 golfers participated in the outing, which followed a shamble format. At …

Burning Down the House

Click the video to watch Cranberry firefighters conduct training drills and a structure burn at an empty house donated to the company.

Where there’s smoke … There’s the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company. With help from state-certified fire instructors from across the region, including the Peters Township and Mt. Lebanon fire departments, Cranberry firefighters conducted a training session at 70 Burke Road over the weekend. While Saturday consisted of a classroom environment, volunteers got hands-on experience Sunday when they lit the vacant house on fire and conducted drills inside the burning home. The owner of the property donated the three-bedroom ranch-style home to the fire company for training. Fire Chief Brian Kovac said the resident had planned to demolish the house and build a new structure, but first called the fire company to ask if they could make use …

Cranberry First Responders to Get New Public Safety Training Facility

Construction on the 5,537-square-foot building could begin by May.

After 10 years in the making, Cranberry is moving forward with plans to build a public safety training facility for its firefighters, police officers and EMS workers. “We’re thrilled,” said Bruce Hezlep, president of the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company. “It will be very well used.” Designs for the 5,537-square-foot building were unveiled at Thursday’s board of supervisors meeting. A rendering of the brick structure — which will be located near the township’s public works building off Route 19 — displays two garage bays for fire engines and a training room that can seat 125. The room also can be divided into two classrooms that seat 40 people each.  In addition to security cameras and an emergency generator, the building also will…
