E. coli is a marker for fecal contamination, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A study of public swimming pools performed during last summer’s swim season found that feces are frequently introduced into pool water by swimmers. Through the study, released last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers found 58 percent of the pool filter water samples collected in public pools tested positive for E. coli, bacteria normally found in human feces. The E. coli is a marker for fecal contamination, the CDC said. The CDC reports that a high percentage of E. coli-positive filters indicates that swimmers frequently contaminate pool water when they have a fecal incident in the water or when feces rinse off of their bodies because they do not shower thoroughly before getting into the water. “People, …

After a slow start, the number of flu cases in the Pittsburgh area has started to rise.
The flu may have passed you by this holiday season, but if you haven't had a flu shot yet, you are at risk. After a slow start, the number of flu cases in the Pittsburgh area has started to rise and is now approaching moderate to high levels. According to the Allegheny County Health Department, as of Dec. 4, there were 30 confirmed cases of the flu in Allegheny County, with the actual number predicted to be three to four times higher, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported. Last flu season, the number of cases in Pennsylvania reached its highest level in the last week of December and first week of January. This year, Pennsylvania has already hit last year's peak. Thanks for bringing this up, Cindy. I got mine in October. I can't imagine why anyone would wait this long to get the flu shot which has been available since late August. Now, doctors and pharmacists are SO busy seeing, and filling prescriptions for, people who are ill, that there may be long waits to get a shot. Unfortunately, the procrastinators are now unhappy that they are not getting instant…   more ›
