Pine-Richland graduate and Chicago Blackhawks left wing Brandon Saad is one of the three finalists for the Calder Trophy, given to the NHL's top rookie. According to WTAE-TV, Saad ranked fifth among rookies in each of the three major scoring categories - goals (10), assists (17) and points (27). The winner will be announced during the Stanley Cup finals. The other two candidates are Montreal Canadiens right wing Brendan Gallagher and Florida Panthers center Jonathan Huberdeau. Gallagher played in 44 games, ranking second among rookies with 15 goals and fourth with 28 points. The former Pine-Richland hockey star logs nearly a minute of power-play time against Phoenix. He also could be looking at more playing time over the next month.
Pine-Richland's Brandon Saad started the game and played 13 minutes, 31 seconds of the Chicago Blackhawks' 6-4 victory over Phoenix late Sunday in Glendale, AZ. And he could well expect more NHL ice time over the next month, at least, according to CSNChicago.com The rookie Saad, 20, replaced tough-guy winger Daniel Carcillo, who apparently will miss up to four weeks due to an MCL injury from a run-in Saturday with Los Angeles defenseman Drew Doughty, according to the Chicago Tribune. Rookie forward Brandon Saad, inactive as a healthy scratch, watched his Chicago Blackhawks teammates win their season-opening game Saturday in Los Angeles and ruin the Kings' pregame re-enactment of their Stanley Cup celebration from last summer. One night later, the former Pine-Richland hockey star is expected to play for the Blackhawks. When the Chicago Blackhawks start the 2013 hockey season Saturday, Pine-Richland hockey star Brandon Saad will be on the roster. The Blackhawks' play the Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings at 3 p.m. ET. Saad made the Blackhawks' season-opening roster last year and played two games before being assigned to the Saginaw Spirits. He returned to the Blackhawks for the Stanley Cup playoffs. The winger has been playing for the Blackhawks' AHL affiliate Rockford IceHogs. He was named AHL Player of the Week last week. UPDATE: The Chicago Blackhawks vs. Coyotes playoff game will be broadcast at 8 p.m. Thursday on CNBC. Brandon Saad has a "good chance" of playing in the playoffs for the Chicago Blackhawks, according to the Chicago Tribune. The 19-year-old former Pine-Richland hockey star spent most of the season playing for the Saginaw Spirits. The U.S. National Junior Hockey team, which includes Gibsonia native and former Pine-Richland High School standout Brandon Saad, was unable to stop a third period surge by the Czechs and lost its second game in a row of the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship in Alberta, Canada. The U.S. next faces Canada Saturday night and a loss could send it to the tournament's Relegation round. Saad accounted for 5 of the USA's 54 shots on goal, but none of his made it into the net. Saad scored Team USA's only goal in the 4-1 loss to Finland, during the team's second game of the competition.
