The Rams finished the season with a 13-7 overall record.
The Pine-Richland boys basketball team assembled all the pieces for another exciting finish, but came up a basket short in a 52-50 loss to Connellsville in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs Thursday night at Hempfield High School. “We always felt like we were in the game because we’ve won these types of games this season,” Pine-Richland coach Brian Gaetano said. The Rams finished the season with a 13-7 overall record. Connellsville, which won its seventh straight game to move to 20-2, advanced to play Mount Lebanon in Saturday’s quarterfinal round. Junior guard Andy Andrle led Pine-Richland with 16 points. Senior guard Eric Holmes and senior guard-forward Ed Baranowski each added nine points for the Rams. Senior guard Chris …

Top-seeded Mount Lebanon ends Rams' season.
Only one team finishes the WPIAL Class AAAA girls basketball playoffs with a winning celebration, and two-time defending champion Mount Lebanon looked like the favorite to claim the prize again after defeating Pine-Richland, 59-33, in a first-round matchup Wednesday night at Baldwin High School. “We were getting the shots, but we just couldn’t get them to fall on a night when Mount Lebanon shot well,” Pine-Richland coach Molly Copple said. The Rams finished the season at 8-11 overall, including victories in three of their final five games. Senior guard Abbie Altman and senior forward Lisa Rader led Pine-Richland with eight points each, and junior forward Kara Peters added seven points. “Unfortunately, we lose a great group of seniors …

PRHS girls face No. 1 Mount Lebanon next. Boys will play Connellsville Wednesday.
The Pine-Richland High School girls basketball team set up its ultimate test of the season so far by defeating Norwin, 53-45, in a WPIAL Class AAAA preliminary-round tournament game Friday night at Gateway. Pine-Richland (8-10) advanced to play No. 1-seeded Mount Lebanon (16-5) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Baldwin High School. Baldwin (17-5) is the only WPIAL team this season to earn a victory over Mount Lebanon, which has won the past two WPIAL Quad-A girls basketball titles. Mount Lebanon is led by senior guard-forward Madison Cable, a Notre Dame basketball recruit who is regarded as one of the top all-around players in the state. Cable averaged 17.1 points per game and is known for getting her jump shot off quickly. Pine-Richland enters the …

PR loses 41-30 in Section 3-AAAA game.
The Butler boys basketball team blocked – but didn’t end - Pine-Richland’s playoff drive in a 41-30 Section 3-AAAA victory Friday night at the Butler Senior High gym. While not conceding anything in a tight playoff chase still involving four teams, Pine-Richland coach Brian Gaetano gave credit to his opponent’s defense. “It was a very defensive and low-scoring game,” Gaetano said. “Defensively, I thought Butler was outstanding and they were pretty much able to take us out of everything we wanted to do. “They were a much better basketball team than we were tonight, and as a result, they earned the victory,” he said. Butler held Pine-Richland to 19 points after 24 minutes and took a 33-19 lead into the final quarter. Pine-Richland slipped to…

Boys lose by 2 points; girls post 60-45 loss.
Pine-Richland boys basketball coach Brian Gaetano predicted several “entertaining” games as the Rams made their drive down the stretch in the WPIAL Section 3-AAAA playoff race. The Rams would have preferred a different ending, but took it down to the final seconds in a 46-44 loss to visiting North Allegheny Tuesday night. With five section games remaining, Pine-Richland’s boys team remains on the bubble in the playoff chase with a 3-4 section mark and an 8-4 overall record. Junior guard Andy Andrle led Pine-Richland with 16 points, and senior guard Eric Holmes added 15. With the score tied at 25 all at halftime, both teams dialed up the defensive pressure in the third quarter. Pine-Richland gave up only four points in the third quarter, …

Senior point guard Chris Rader leads team with 13 points.
One of the most overlooked roles of a point guard is recognizing defenses as they shift throughout the flow of a close high school basketball game. Pine-Richland senior point guard Chris Rader led his team with 13 points, but he might have done his best work reading and reacting to Seneca Valley’s multiple defenses in the Rams’ 55-51 Section 3-AAAA home victory Saturday night. “They were throwing a lot of defenses at us, the 1-3-1, diamond-and-2, box-and-one, and they were trying to take out (Pine-Richland guard) Andy Andrle,” Rader said. “The rest of us had to step up and make shots.” To make things more interesting, Seneca Valley coach Victor Giannotta threw in some half-court traps, some man-to-man pressure, and multiple full-court …

Missed 3-point shots hurt Rams' offensive effort.
The Pine-Richland boys basketball team missed 18 3-point shot attempts, and as a result the Rams missed their opportunity to knock off top-ranked and undefeated Shaler in a 56-43 Section 3-AAAA loss Tuesday night at the Pine-Richland gym. “We couldn’t make shots tonight, and had by far our worst shooting percentage,” Pine-Richland coach Brian Gaetano said. “Shaler had something to do with that because they play excellent half-court defense. “We had some open looks, but when you shoot 2-for-20 from the 3-point line, you’re not going to beat many people with that,” he said. “We’ve got to find a way to rectify that. We got too far behind too early.” Junior guard Andy Andrle and senior guard/forward Ed Baranowski led Pine-Richland with nine …

Collin Jackson makes key play in 45-41 victory.
Sophomore Collin Jackson made a key steal and layup in the final minute as the Pine-Richland boys basketball team picked up a thrilling 45-41 Section 3-AAAA victory at North Hills Friday night. Jackson, a 6-foot-4 forward, stole the ball and instantly cashed in the opportunity for two points to give the Rams a three-point lead during the tense finish. “That (steal and layup) was the reason we won the game, and we never gave up the lead after that,” Pine-Richland coach Brian Gaetano said. Jackson finished the night with 13 points. Junior guard Andy Andrle hit four 3-point shots and both of his free throw chances and led Pine-Richland with 14 points. Alex Wright scored 20 points, including 18 in the second half, to lead North Hills. “North …
