Patch got a tour of the store to find out what makes it different from Giant Eagle and other discount grocery stores.
"Always fresh, but not real fancy" is the way John Tedesco, senior vice president of merchandising, likes to describe the new Good Cents grocery store opening Sunday in Ross Towne Center. The doors at the 7215 McKnight Road store open at 7 a.m. and a ribbon cutting is scheduled for 8 a.m. But unlike its next-door competitor, Bottom Dollar Foods, there will be no giveaways to entice customers into the store. "We've found in the past that customers just want to get inside and shop," he said. UPDATE: Several hundred people were waiting in line Thursday morning when the ribbon was cut, opening the new Bottom Dollar Foods store in Ross Towne Center, located at 7221 McKnight Road. The grand opening festivities included giveaways of free private brand products to the first 200 customers, free reusable bags while supplies last, along with a guest appearance by former Pittsburgh Steeler L.C. Greenwood, who signed autographs. The new store opened as its next-door neighbor, Valu King, owned by Giant Eagle, continues to prepare for its opening sometime in October or November. The discount grocery store is expected to open in the fall.
It appears that a discount grocery store war is about to break out in Ross Towne Center on McKnight Road in Ross Township. Giant Eagle confirmed today it is planning to open a discount version of its chain, Valu King, sometime in October or November. “We are excited to bring our first Pittsburgh-area Valu King location to Ross Town Center later this fall,” said a Giant Eagle spokesman. According to a real estate web site, the store will be located at the former home of Freight Liquidators, which is right next door to a Bottom Dollar store which is also set to open later this summer. Giant Eagle operates 7 Valu King stores, 4 in northeast Ohio, 2 in Erie, and one in Johnstown. The Valu King stores aim to appeal both to budget-minded …
