St. Alphonsus Falls to St. Gabriel in Girls Basketball Championship

The Gators overcome a fourth-quarter St. Alphonsus lead to earn their fifth straight diocesan title.

Clinging to a one-possession lead with less than two minutes to play, St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin School forward Michaela Cavataio changed the basketball game with one hard fall to floor. And like all good falls, she took someone down with her. St. Alphonsus School's dominant 6-foot center Samantha Breen came barreling to the hoop late in Sunday's Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh varsity girls championship game at Oakland Catholic High School looking for a game-high 18 points and trying to narrow St. Gabriel's lead to just one point. But Michaela—already with four fouls on the day—stood in Samantha's way, and apparently, stood the right way, for when the whistle sounded and the ball sailed wide of the hoop, the foul was against…

The first round of the playoffs was against St. Bede, whom the girls defeated, 40-10. Next, the 11-girl team went on to defeat St. Bernadette, 22-5, in the quarterfinals. St. Alexis lost to St. Alphonsus, 17-14, in the semi-finals of the diocesan tournament. “These girls came together from three different teams last year to become one incredible team," said Head …

'Hurry Up And Wait' Is Message for Boys Basketball Team

PRHS girls' team plays Friday. Boys have unwanted week off.

Basketball coaches have learned to expect the unexpected at the annual Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League basketball championship pairings meeting. The WPIAL came up with another twist this time around, requiring some teams like the Pine-Richland boys to wait more than a week before playing their opening-round games. “I didn’t expect we’d have to wait a week,” Pine-Richland coach Brian Gaetano said minutes after the pairings were revealed Tuesday night. “I expected a Saturday or a Monday game. I didn’t expect this long to wait before getting back out there.” Pine-Richland boys (13-6) open the Class AAAA playoffs next Wednesday, Feb. 23, against Connellsville (19-2) at a site to be determined. Pine-Richland girls (7-10) …

Butler Slows PR Boys' Push for a Playoff Berth

PR loses 41-30 in Section 3-AAAA game.

The Butler boys basketball team blocked – but didn’t end - Pine-Richland’s playoff drive in a 41-30 Section 3-AAAA victory Friday night at the Butler Senior High gym. While not conceding anything in a tight playoff chase still involving four teams, Pine-Richland coach Brian Gaetano gave credit to his opponent’s defense. “It was a very defensive and low-scoring game,” Gaetano said. “Defensively, I thought Butler was outstanding and they were pretty much able to take us out of everything we wanted to do. “They were a much better basketball team than we were tonight, and as a result, they earned the victory,” he said. Butler held Pine-Richland to 19 points after 24 minutes and took a 33-19 lead into the final quarter. Pine-Richland slipped to…

PR Girls ‘Pitch’ A Shutout in Third Quarter

Lady Rams post 51-38 victory over Butler.

The Pine-Richland girls basketball team pulled off a rare defensive achievement by shutting out its opponent in the third quarter in a 51-38 Section 3-AAAA victory at Butler Thursday night. Pine-Richland broke on top 17-8 in the first quarter and outscored Butler 8-0 in the third quarter. The Rams rank third in the section in overall team defense after allowing an average of 43.5 points during the first 13 games. Only North Hills (40.2) and Shaler (42.2) have allowed less points per game. “We got out to a strong start,” Pine-Richland coach Molly Copple said. “Then in the third quarter we made some 3-point shots and held Butler to zero points, and we capitalized on our fast break.” Pine-Richland improved to 2-6 in section play and 5-8 …

PR boys, girls suffer dual losses to North Allegheny

Boys lose by 2 points; girls post 60-45 loss.

Pine-Richland boys basketball coach Brian Gaetano predicted several “entertaining” games as the Rams made their drive down the stretch in the WPIAL Section 3-AAAA playoff race. The Rams would have preferred a different ending, but took it down to the final seconds in a 46-44 loss to visiting North Allegheny Tuesday night. With five section games remaining, Pine-Richland’s boys team remains on the bubble in the playoff chase with a 3-4 section mark and an 8-4 overall record. Junior guard Andy Andrle led Pine-Richland with 16 points, and senior guard Eric Holmes added 15. With the score tied at 25 all at halftime, both teams dialed up the defensive pressure in the third quarter. Pine-Richland gave up only four points in the third quarter, …

PR Boys Miss Chance to Defeat No. 1 Shaler

Missed 3-point shots hurt Rams' offensive effort.

The Pine-Richland boys basketball team missed 18 3-point shot attempts, and as a result the Rams missed their opportunity to knock off top-ranked and undefeated Shaler in a 56-43 Section 3-AAAA loss Tuesday night at the Pine-Richland gym.  “We couldn’t make shots tonight, and had by far our worst shooting percentage,” Pine-Richland coach Brian Gaetano said. “Shaler had something to do with that because they play excellent half-court defense.  “We had some open looks, but when you shoot 2-for-20 from the 3-point line, you’re not going to beat many people with that,” he said. “We’ve got to find a way to rectify that. We got too far behind too early.” Junior guard Andy Andrle and senior guard/forward Ed Baranowski led Pine-Richland with nine …

PR Girls Hit Halfway Point With Loss

Lady Rams lose to Shaler, 55-39.

Pine-Richland failed to overcome a cold first-half shooting streak and closed out the first half of Section 3-AAAA competition with a 55-39 loss against highly ranked Shaler Monday night at the Pine-Richland gym. “Our rebounding was very good and our transition offense was effective,” Pine-Richland coach Molly Copple said. “We just didn’t shoot the ball very well.” Pine-Richland moved to 1-5 in section play and 4-7 overall, while Shaler (5-1, 11-1) remained a game behind Oakland Catholic (6-0, 9-3) in the section standings. Shaler broke on top 31-16 at halftime. The second half proved to be a lot closer, with Shaler holding a 24-23 edge in scoring. “We played decent defense in the second half and played shot for shot with Shaler,” Copple …

PR Boys Win Thriller Against North Hills

Collin Jackson makes key play in 45-41 victory.

Sophomore Collin Jackson made a key steal and layup in the final minute as the Pine-Richland boys basketball team picked up a thrilling 45-41 Section 3-AAAA victory at North Hills Friday night. Jackson, a 6-foot-4 forward, stole the ball and instantly cashed in the opportunity for two points to give the Rams a three-point lead during the tense finish. “That (steal and layup) was the reason we won the game, and we never gave up the lead after that,” Pine-Richland coach Brian Gaetano said. Jackson finished the night with 13 points. Junior guard Andy Andrle hit four 3-point shots and both of his free throw chances and led Pine-Richland with 14 points. Alex Wright scored 20 points, including 18 in the second half, to lead North Hills. “North …

Girls Lose to North Hills, 45-36

Junior guard Emily Johanson led Pine-Richland with 11 points.

The Pine-Richland girls basketball team continued its streak of solid defensive performances, but failed to control the boards and lost several chances at second and third shots in the second half of a 45-36 Section 3-AAAA loss at North Hills Thursday night. “We needed to improve our offensive rebounding, but other than that we played a very solid basketball game,” Pine-Richland coach Molly Copple said. Pine-Richland moved to 4-6 overall and 1-4 in section play. The Rams led 26-23 at the half, but North Hills’ defense limited them to 10 points after halftime. “Defensively, we did all right, but we just couldn’t capitalize more on our first, second and third shots,” Copple said. Pine-Richland ranks second in the section in defense after …
