Within hours of Friday’s mass shooting in Newton, CT, gun-control debates began raging across the country. The shooting left 27 people dead, including 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary. The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, was armed with an assault rifle and two semiautomatic pistols, according to Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance. By Rev. Dai Morgan When something occurs like the senseless shooting spree, this past Friday, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, one’s perspective of what is important changes. I have withdrawn my original piece for today’s Sunday Reflections column. Nothing else seems to have much significance after such a horrible event. I will use this opportunity to make an observation in regard to the shootings at Newtown. Though in my profession I am a user of words, in fact, I do not have a desire to say much. First, at this time, I don’t have much enthusiasm for writing. Second, as a matter of respect, so soon after the event, I don’t want to speak. Local and state police in Newtown, CT, were called to an elementary school at about 9:30 this morning after a gunman opened fire at the school.
UPDATED: Connecticut police said Friday afternoon that 26 people, including 20 children, were killed at an elementary school after a gunman opened fire. Another adult was killed at a second location. The Scene Police in Newtown, CT, were called to the Sandy Hook School at about 9:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call. They alerted Connecticut State Police and authorities began an active shooter investigation once they arrived at the school, according to Connecticut State Police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance. P.S. EVERYTHING needs to be on the table to solve this problem and protect our children -- including looking at high-powered weapons and ensuring there is a good background check & waiting period for all people who apply to purchase guns.
