Fire Chief: Paint Rags in Dryer Could be to Blame for Pine House Fire

The home on Old State Road is more than a century old.

Firefighters believe they have determined the cause for a blaze that swept through a Pine Township home Monday, leaving it uninhabitable. Wexford Volunteer Fire Company Chief Tim Flaherty said the fire is believed to have originated in a dryer located in the laundry room on the first floor of the home on Old State Road. “Some rags or towels used with paint cleaning solvents were run through the wash,” he said. “It appears that they caught fire in the dryer while it was operating.” Flaherty noted there typically are warnings posted on the side of washer and dryer doors advising that clothing exposed to flammable and combustible liquids should not be placed inside. Monday’s blaze in the laundry room quickly spread through the building. …

Update: Wreckage Cleared After Tractor Trailer Accident Snarls Traffic on I-79

Traffic was backed up beyond Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange

A jack-knifed tractor-trailer Tuesday morning created big delays for southbound commuters on Interstate 79. The wreckage has since been cleared an all lanes are open again.  The accident occurred in the middle of rush hour in southbound lanes at the 75-mile marker, which is about two miles south of the Pennsylvania turnpike. Traffic was backed up beyond the turnpike interchange. There are no reports of any injuries and the cause is under investigation. Did you get caught in this traffic nightmare? Crews Battle Fire at Century-Old Pine Township Home

Several fire companies battled a blaze on Old State Road Monday afternoon that heavily damaged a Pine Township home. Wexford Volunteer Fire Company Chief Tim Flaherty said crews were called to the home located near Wexford Bayne Road at about 2:15 p.m. for reports of a fire in the laundry room on the first floor of the home. The blaze quickly spread through the building. Flames could be seen shooting from the roof of the three-story home, which was built more than a century ago. "The house is pretty old, so there were a lot of void spaces in attic and the roof structure," the chief said of why the blaze spread so quickly. Flaherty said one of the owners was at home when the fire started. She and two dogs escaped unharmed. Firefighters …

Teen Charged in Richland Road Rage Stabbing Heading to Court

A Butler County teen charged with stabbing another man with a pocketknife during a road rage incident on Route 8 in Richland Township is heading to court. Kristian Nelson, 19, waived a preliminary hearing Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge Suzanne Blaschak. According to Northern Regional Police, Nelson was the passenger in a car with two other Butler teens who were driving on William Flynn Highway April 10. All three got into an argument with Chris Baer, who was walking on the highway. Police Chief Robert Amann said Baer, a 28-year-old from the Bakerstown area of Richland, spit twice at the car's occupants, hitting the gold Honda's windshield—and then striking Nelson. Got Drugs? Police To Collect Unwanted, Unused Prescription Drugs

Got medication left over from a forgotten ailment? Dispose of them safely during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

Police will collect unused, unwanted prescription drugs from people who no longer want or need them as part of the National Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 27. Several drop off points will be located around the Pine-Richland community. Medications may be dropped off between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Northland Public Library, located at 300 Cumberland Road in McCandless. Police will arrange for safe disposal of the unwanted drugs. Allegheny County Police also will collect unwanted, unused and expired prescription drugs and other medications from 10 to 2 p.m. at the North Park County Police Station, located at 700 West Ridge Drive. Nearby: Armed with Shotgun, Man Holds Up Cranberry Gas Station

Cranberry Township police are asking for help in tracking down a man who, armed with a shotgun, robbed the BP gas station on Route 19 in Cranberry Tuesday night. According to Cranberry police Sgt. Chuck Mascellino, the man entered the store around 10:50 p.m. and ordered the cashier to "give him the money." The cashier turned over an undisclosed amount of cash before the robber ran from the store.  Mascellino said the incident took less than a minute from the time the man walked in and ran out. Police searched the area with the help of a K-9 officer, but were not able to locate the suspect.  He is described as a white, with a thin build, about 5-foot-9 inches to 6-feet tall. Franklin Park Couple Charged of Abusing Adopted Children Seek Custody of Biological Children

Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey Manning will consider the request Thursday.

A Franklin Park couple accused of physically abusing and starving two children they adopted from Ethiopia in March are asking again to be reunited with their biological children, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. Douglas Barbour, 33, and his wife, Kristen Barbour, 30, of Cole Road, Wexford, are charged with two counts each of endangering the welfare of children and one count each of aggravated assault.  Douglas Barbour, a Pennsylvania Deputy Attorney General, is also charged with simple assault, court documents show.   Barbour has been suspended from his state job without pay, Attorney General Linda Kelly said in a statement after the couple's arrest Oct. 4. Nearby: Mars Area High School Evacuated After Bomb Threat

This is the third bomb threat at the school since February.

Mars Area High School in Adams Township was evacuated Tuesday morning after a bomb threat. Adams Township Police Chief Bill Westerman said the threat was discovered inside a boys bathroom at the school at about 11 a.m. All students, faculty and staff were sent across Route 228 to Mars Area Middle School while police waited for bomb sniffing dogs from Allegheny County and a private firm hired by the district to search the school, Westerman said. The high school students were housed in the middle school gym before being transported by school buses back to the high school. Police Looking for Info After Man Claiming to Have Bomb Attempts to Rob Cranberry Drug Store

Cranberry Township Police are looking for more information after a man who said he was carrying a bomb attempted to rob the Rite-Aid pharmacy in Cranberry Monday Night. Police were called the pharmacy on Route 19 at about 9:25 p.m., Sgt. Chuck Mascellino said in a news release. The man fled the store prior to officer arriving on the scene. “The male suspect reportedly had a bomb in his possession and was demanding drugs from the pharmacist,” Mascellino said. Police were unable to locate the suspect after searching the area. A K-9 officer also assisted in the search. A 19-year-old Butler County man was arrested Wednesday after a road rage incident in along Route 8 in Richland Township led to another man being stabbed with a pocketknife. Sarver resident Kristian Nelson is charged with aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person. Northern Regional Police Chief Bob Amann said Nelson was the passenger in a car with two other teens who were driving on William Flynn Highway at about 5:45 p.m.  For reasons still unknown, the teens, who are all from Butler County, got into an argument with Chris Baer, who was walking on the highway.
