E. coli is a marker for fecal contamination, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A study of public swimming pools performed during last summer’s swim season found that feces are frequently introduced into pool water by swimmers. Through the study, released last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers found 58 percent of the pool filter water samples collected in public pools tested positive for E. coli, bacteria normally found in human feces. The E. coli is a marker for fecal contamination, the CDC said. The CDC reports that a high percentage of E. coli-positive filters indicates that swimmers frequently contaminate pool water when they have a fecal incident in the water or when feces rinse off of their bodies because they do not shower thoroughly before getting into the water. “People, …

Baer organized what would become the Northern Regional Police Department, the first combined police department in the state.
Chief Richard (Biff) Baer died May 22 at the age of 83. Baer organized the Pine Township Police Department which became Tri-Area Police Department, the first combined police department in the State of Pennsylvania, and retired as Chief of Police of the now Northern Regional Police Department. Baer was president of North Hills Police Association, The Allegheny County Chiefs of Police Association, The Western Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association, The State of Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association, and The FBI National Academy Associates. The parents 2-year-old Maddox Derkosh, who was killed after falling into a wild African painted dogs exhibit last fall, have filed a lawsuit against the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, according to WPXI. The family is asking for damages in excess of $300,000, citing wrongful death, negligence and negligent infliction of emotional distress among other claims, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. The lawsuit filed on behalf of Jason and Elizabeth Derkosh of Whitehall Borough claims that zoo officials had ample warning that parents routinely lift their children onto a rail overlooking the exhibit so that the children can see the dogs better, according to the report. A new indoor sports complex is in the works for Pine Township at the intersection of Franklin and Warrendale roads. Pine Township residents Glenn and Carol Foglio are partnering up with Dave Gray, better known in the area as “Coach Dave,” on the project, which will offer children and adults the opportunity to play a variety of sports, including basketball, flag football, volleyball and more. There also are plans to add a concession stand as host wellness and nutritional seminars for the community. “But what were really want to do is get kids playing,” Gray said. Pine-Richland Middle School choirs earned top awards at the “Music in the Parks” choral competition in Hershey on May 10-11. In all, 15 choirs from throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New Hampshire and New York competed at this event. In addition to competing for placement, the participating choirs also receive a rating from the judges of Superior (this being the highest rating), Excellent, Good, Fair or Poor. The final results included the following awards: PRMS Choral Director Heather Flora said two collegiate level choral professionals scored the choirs. "Our middle school choral students worked extremely hard to prepare for this event,” she said. “They gave exceptional performances in Hershey, and I'm so very proud of their efforts.” …
There were nearly 4,000 motorcycle accidents in Pennsylvania last year.
The Greater Pittsburgh Motorcycle Safety Council was just created in response to the increased number of motorcycle crashes occurring regionally. According to PennDOT data there were nearly 4,000 motorcycle crashes in Pennsylvania last year. Tragically, 210 people lost their lives in those crashes In District 11, which encompasses Allegheny, Beaver and Lawrence counties, there were 429 motorcycle crashes, resulting in 13 fatalities in 2012. With the growing number of licensed motorcyclists statewide, the council is charged with raising safety awareness among motorists and motorcyclists.
