News Nearby: Sewickley Golf Legend to Compete at Allegheny Country Club

Sewickley native Carol Semple Thompson will compete this week on the golf course she played as a youth when hosts the 76th Pennsylvania State Women’s Amateur Golf Championships. 

The championships run Monday through Friday in Sewickley Heights.

Spectators are encouraged to attend in support of the game and local favorite, LPGA Hall of Fame golfer Carol Semple Thompson.

Semple Thompson is one of the most decorated amateurs in golf history and carries a proud family history of dominating amateur golf in Pennsylvania. Her mother, the late Phyllis Semple, was a state champion and Carol has won the state title 22 times, according to Pennsylvania State Women’s Amateur Golf Association. 

Semple Thompson was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2009. Her father, the late Harton "Bud" Semple, was United States Golf Association president in 1974-75, according to the Post-Gazette.

Players can compete in one of three divisions: the Amateur Championship, which is in its 76th year; the 43rd Senior Championship for players age 50 and over; and the 17th Super Senior Championship for players 65 and older.

Monday is the Medal Qualifying Round followed by Match Play from Tuesday through Thursday. The Super Senior Final is Thursday with the Amateur and Senior Championships being played Friday.
