Pine-Richland Native Brandon Saad Celebrating Blackhawks Stanley Cup Win

The 20-year-old is in his rookie season with the NHL team.

The Pittsburgh Penguins may not have made it to the Stanley Cup finals, but one of Pine-Richland’s own is celebrating his role in the big game.

Pine-Richland hockey star Brandon Saad, now a left winger for the Chicago Blackhawks, played a major role in the team’s 3-2 come-from-behind victory Monday over the Boston Bruins to take the Stanley Cup.

Saad played on 19 shifts tallying 12:03 of ice time, including 1:10 on the power play and 1:34 on the penalty kill, according to Michigan Live.

CBS Sports reported that with the Blackhawks on the penalty kill, Saad set up Michal Handzus with a pass for a shorthanded goal to open the night’s scoring.

Saad, 20, made the Blackhawks' season-opening roster in 2012 and played two games before being assigned to the junior ice hockey league the Saginaw Spirits in Michigan.

He scored his first career goal as an NHL players on Feb. 5. In May, Saad was named a finalist for the 2013 Calder Memorial Trophy.
