Whiz Kids Update: Tech Students Head to National Contest

Pine-Richland High Schools Students qualified for the national championship to be held in May in Michigan.

Names: Evan Bedel, Matt Delvernois, Chris Gillis, Jarrett Gustovich, Jack Hudak, Rishab Humar, Nate Johnston, Heath Lang, Greg Lawrence, Brian Martin, Kellen McGrath, Shane Raber, Brandt Ruszkiewicz, Ashley Schantz, Bryan Tenfelde, Andrew Wood and Mike Wood.

Accomplishment: Pine-Richland High School students earned first and second place at the Pennsylvania State Technology Student Association Competition April 14-15 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort. Both F-1 in Schools teams qualified for the national championship to be held in May in Michigan.  

"F1 in Schools, the Formula One Technology Challenge, is a competition, open to all USA-based students aged 11-18, to design and manufacture CO2-powered model racing cars," according to the HITech Inc. website. "Teams consist of three to six students and compete against each other at state, national, and international levels to determine the best-engineered and fastest car in the USA."

First place winners included Predator Racing team members Evan Bedel, Jarrett Gustovich, Greg Lawrence, Brandt Ruszkiewicz, Bryan Tenfelde and Andrew Wood.

Second place winners in the Cash Money Racing category included  Matt Delvernois, Chris Gillis, Jack Hudak, Nate Johnston, Heath Lang, Brian Martin and Mike Wood.  

In the Vex Robotics category, Rishab Humar and Kellen McGrath placed fourth.

In the CAD 2D Architecture category, Shane Raber earned ninth place; and in the Flight Endurance Category, Humar placed fifth.

In the Structural Engineering category, Ashley Schantz and McGrath placed third.

Brandt Ruskiewicz placed seventh in the Transportation Modeling category.

The program is sponsored by the Technology Education Department and teacher Evan Clark.

Key to Awesomeness: This is the third year in a row that Pine-Richland High School students won the state title.
