Some Pine-Richland Students to Pay $80 Activity Fee

The new fee affects high school and middle school students.

Going back to school just got a little more expensive -- an $80 activity fee will be charged to Pine-Richland high school and middle school students for the 2011-12 school year.

The came about during budget discussions this year as a way to avoid cutting special activities and sports programs.

Revenue from the fee will offset the cost of paying stipends to teachers who are sponsors for the after-school activities.

The Pine-Richland School Board set the fee at $80 when it met earlier this week. The deadline to pay is Sept. 30.

"Payment of the fee will allow each student to participate in an unlimited number of sports and student activities," explained Rachel Hathhorn, communications director for Pine-Richland School District, in a letter to parents that is published on the district's website.

The district is working to set up an automated payment system so payments may be made online, by phone via credit card or electronic check, according to Hathhorn.

"Those failing to pay by the deadline will be deemed ineligible to participate," Hathhorn wrote in the letter.
