Seven St. Alphonsus Students Become Published Poets

April is National Poetry Month

Seven students from St. Alphonsus School’s eighth grade class have recently become published poets. Under the direction of their teacher, Mrs. Jean Novak, the students submitted original poems to the Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans and recently received notice that their work would be included in the soon-to-be published volume.

The student authors from St. Alphonsus are: Maria Conti, Matthew Denk, Molly Gaugler, Gina Gebhardt, Madelyn Jack, Annamarie Lovre and Jimmy Vinski.

The Anthology is a forum that recognizes writing excellence in students. They select and publish the finest poems and short stories submitted by student writers through their teachers. The books will be delivered to the students in April in celebration of National Poetry month.

Morning and Night by Gina Gebhardt
The sun rises to wake us up,
The sun sets to tell us good night,
In the morning, the sun springs to rise high in the sky,
At night, the sun stoops low in the sky,
The sun is like a clock that never loses time,
Sunrises and sunsets are beautiful sights,
That fade away, and appear again.

Colors of the Sunset by Matthew Denk
Have you ever asked why the sunset is a sign of love?
Each color represents a certain part of love.
Red is for the heart which shows how couples love each other.
Pink is for Cupid and how he made people fall in love.
Yellow represents getting to know one another.
Lastly, orange is for happily ever after and a good life together forever.

Sunset Fun by Jimmy Vinski
When you’re tired and covered in sweat,
Sit back and just watch the Sun set.
It can really be fun
Watching the vast, slow Sun
It’s an event that you’ll never forget!

The Sunrise by Madelyn Jack
My beloved sunrise, how I adore your flashing beams of golden halos
creeping through the cracks of my curtains to make your presence
known. As I whip away the chilling morning frost covering the window, I
peer out into the foggy unknown streets of the morning only to find
your glorious bursts of heat wrapped around the skies like a mother’s
arms around her child, and as the day goes on, the luminous rays still
remain in my eyes. Until morning shall I feel your loving presence once
again.

Michigan’s Sunset by Annamarie Lovre
Red, yellow, orange, purple, and blue
Giving off a marvelous light
Setting in the west
Putting me to sleep
Day into night
Sunset

Beauty in the Sky by Maria Conti
The day has reached its end
But the sky is still alive
Watching the magnificent fiery hues set ablaze in the sky
I wonder in awe, behind it, what may lie?
Perhaps a world of color that is just seeping through
Or a glorious light that no one ever knew
With a last glint of sunlight, the treasure is gone
Nothing so beautiful seems to last too long.

Sunset by Molly Gaugler
Every day, where the sky meets the horizon, the sun sets.
Bordering the hills like an ocean over a sandy white shore,
the sun illuminates the waters that flow in creeks and riverbeds.
Reflecting like a dim candle flickering in the darkness.
Flower petals pass by slowly in the majestic breezes,
gently floating downwards.
Daffodils and dandelions are scattered throughout
the rolling hills of green.
Sunlit ponds glimmer like diamonds in the light
as the glow of the sunset hits the water.
Breathtaking cool winds flow through the fields of wheat
as the scent of wild flowers begin to permeate into the air.
The sky is like a canvas, full of shades of
purples, yellows, oranges, and reds.
The tall green grass slowly dances in the winds that
whisper quietly through the tree branches.
Then, just as soon as it had come,
the sunset disappeared into a somewhat empty night sky.
