These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,400 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $36 million, that will be offered next spring.

About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain "finalist" standing, and about half of the "finalists" will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

The "commended" students are among only 34,000 students nationwide to achieve this status. Although, these students will not continue in the 2012 competition for National Merit Scholarships, they are among the top 5 percent of 1.5 million students.

To achieve "semifinalist" and "commended" status in the 2012 competition, students excelled on the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
