Pine-Richland's Carin Liberati Named Finalist for Teacher of Year

Hance first-grade teacher is one of 12 finalists for the Pennsylvania honor.

For the third year in a row, a teacher has been named a finalist for the Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year honor.

first-grade teacher Carin Liberati was recognized Thursday by Pennsylvania Secretary of Education Ron Tomalis, who officially announced the 12 finalists for the state's 2012 Teacher of the Year.

Liberati has been a teacher with Pine-Richland for 20 years. She was not available for comment.

Last year Pine-Richland High School French teacher Thomas Joyce was a finalist. 

PRHS math teacher Michelle Switala was named Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year for 2010.

Teachers were nominated by students, parents, their colleagues and members of their community. The winner will be announced late this year.

Pennsylvania's Teacher of the Year program is co-sponsored by the state Department of Education and the Pennsylvania chapter of the National State Teacher of the Year.

"I truly believe that many of our nation's most passionate and innovative educators are working in Pennsylvania schools," Tomalis said. "The teachers who have been chosen as finalists for Teacher of the Year are proof of that." 

The 11 other teachers who were named finalists are:

  • Kindra Brelsford, Loyalsock Township School District, Lycoming County
  • Michele Dubaich, West Perry School District, Perry County
  • Edward Herbert, Manheim Central School District, Lancaster County
  • Christopher Jack, Bethel Park School District, Allegheny County
  • Charles Keeler, Rose Tree Media School District, Delaware County
  • Jill Long, Pequea Valley School District, Lancaster County
  • Erich May, Bellefonte Area School District, Centre County
  • Tricia Miller, Penns Valley Area School District, Centre County
  • Maria Pandolfi, The School District of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County
  • Margaret Tavakalian, Upper Darby School District, Delaware County
  • Steven Vayanos, Cornell School District, Allegheny County
