Pine-Richland Students Recognized for Their Artistry

One-sixth of Scholastic Art Show awards go to Pine-Richland.

The white-haired man stares out from his portrait, engulfed in dark sepia tones with a lone flicker of color— the tiny red-orange glow at the end of his cigarette.

The image is captivating.

The artist who created the work, Tate Gardner Leone, is one of a host of young Pine-Richland artists whose award-winning work is on display through Friday at the prestigious Scholastic Art Show at LaRoche College

The show'sawards are the brainchild of the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, which brings young artists to a national audience through the awards every year, dating back to 1923.

Past winners include Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.

PRHS art teacher Ramon Riley was triumphant when he appeared before the Pine-Richland School Board directors recently to tell them of the success of Pine-Richland art students.

Comparing the students' sweep of awards to the 1984 Grammys when Michael Jackson "won everything," Riley ticked off the many honors Pine-Richland claimed in the regional competition among 40 school districts.

"We won one-sixth of the show," said Riley.

Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for a chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published. Judges look for originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

The Gold Key is the highest level of achievement a teen artist can receive at the regional level. The Gold Key works are forwarded to New York City for national judging.

In the portfolio division, Pine-Richland won four of the five Gold Key awards, Riley said. The winners were Leone, Deanna Deley, Suzy Sarabok and Carla Steppan.

Steppanalso was named one of five regional American Visions nominees for her "best-of-show" drawing, "Equilibrium."

A special photography portfolio award was earned by Victoria Mustovic.

In addition to the portfolio awards, PR students also claimed 32 of 140 other Gold Key awards and 36 out of 158 Silver Key awards. The Silver Key awards go to works worthy of recognition on the regional level. Honorable mentions are for works demonstrating artistic potential.
