Overtime Victory: Pine-Richland Upsets Bishop Canevin in PIHL Playoffs Win

Senior Dillon Kessy scores the winning goal.

Pine-Richland forward Dillon Kessey scored the winning goal in overtime Tuesday to upset the no. 1 seeded Bishop Canevin in the Class AA Penguins Cup PIHL semifinals.

“I didn't know it went in,” Kessey told the Pittsburgh-Tribune Review. “I looked at the referee and saw his hand signal. I was so excited. I can't describe it. We lost in the quarterfinals when I was a sophomore and last year in the semifinals. To get this is huge for us.”

Pine-Richland, the no.4 seed, defeated the Crusaders by a score of 3-2 at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Complex. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Rams players cleared the bench to mob Kessey on the ice after he scored the game-winning goal.

There was some tension over the final score. At some point during a battle in front of the net, the cage moved, causing Bishop Canevin Coach Kevin Zielmanski to protest the goal, the Trib reports.

The Crusaders drew first blood in Tuesday’s matchup, with Brennen Adams scoring on a power play. Pine-Richland responded a few minutes later with a power-play goal of its own by Ryan Cole, according to the Trib. By the second period, the score was tied 2-2, sending the game into overtime.
