How to do a Home Inventory

Q: Do insurance companies require documentation of household items in the event of a man-made or natural disaster?
A: It is not required but having one will make it easier and faster to settle a claim for losses. You will also be more likely to get a higher value for your goods with appropriate documentation.  Additionally, this protection is a good idea against theft.
Here's how to get it done:
- go from room to room listing your possessions.
- describe each item, include price, make , model and serial numbers.
- if you have sales receipts for items, they should be included as well.
- take pictures or videotape as you go, describing what is in each room, cabinet, drawer, etc
- create a digital record - check out: Liberty Mutual- they have a home inventory app you can download onto your ipad or phone.
- store and back up your inventory in a secure place such as a flash drive, phone app or i-cloud.  Physical documents and photos can be stored in a fireproof safe.

Creating this home inventory list, like organizing a room, can be a little bit daunting, please feel free to call Organization Lane if you need any assistance.
