Teacher's Petition Asks Pennsylvanians to Reject Voter ID Law

The petition has already garnered more than 2,250 signatures.

More than 2,250 people have signed a petition created by an area teacher urging Allegheny County's elections manager not to enforce the new statewide voter ID law.

mandates that each voter present a valid photo ID at the polls on Election Day, a stipulation that opponents say will ultimately prevent the poor, the elderly, and people of color in Pennsylvania from voting.

"These demographic groups typically lean Democratic and local state Rep. Mike Turzai, R-Allegheny County, " petition organizer Steven Singer said in a statement.

"The law is purportedly intended to prevent voter fraud, a problem that representatives from both parties have acknowledged doesn’t really exist in the state."

Singer’s petition will directly challenge the elections manager for Allegheny County—Mark Wolosik—to reject the new law, and to the full extent of his legal authority, refuse to enforce it.

“As a middle school teacher in a district with a large segment of minority and poor residents, many of my students’ parents will be directly affected by this new law,” Singer explained. “This confusing and discriminatory law could prevent up to 758,000 registered voters in Pennsylvania from casting their ballot come Election Day and I couldn’t sit back and watch that happen.”

The petition includes signatures and testimonies from other Pennsylvanians who are concerned "about the chaos" this new law might foster on Election Day and others who are "outraged that their loved ones might now be shut out from their polling places."

One Pittsburgh resident who signed the petition lamented: “My 88 year-old mother can’t find her birth certificate and has no dated photo ID.”

Singer, of White Oak, is no stranger to citizen advocacy.

He is also the co-founder of the group Tell Everyone All Cuts Hurt, known as T.E.A.C.H., which was organized more than two years ago to protest cuts to K-12 education funding in the state.

Folks, listen....in the current times you must have a valid photo ID for darn near everything. In everyday business, travel, banking, driving and shopping you must have a valid ID. I am 47 years old and need to get my passport for travel to Canada. I didn't have a birth certificate, I went to Vidal Records and got my certificate in 3 hours. For someone to no be able to spend 3 hours to have the vital information to vote is a shame or a person ready to commit voter fraud. This should be a nationwide law. People, people....if you want to vote so bad....take the 3 hours and get the necessary paperwork. You have wasted more time complaining about it than getting the necessary paperwork....

Those are privlidges there's a big difference.Voting is a rite under the constitution.

Since more people voted in Philadelphia 4 years ago than actually LIVED there, I think Mike Turzai's comments were misconstrued. He meant that Romney might have a chance to win PA if things like that (& Black Panther thugs intimidating voters) don't occur during this election.

As someone doing genealogy could tell you, some documents are not available for any price or effort. Fires and floods happens. So your 93 year old grandmother should not drive under any circumstances yet you want her to spend days trying to get a birth cert? and a license? How about grandfathering in new voters instead

I had to provide my 5 year old's birth certificate just to sign up for kindergarten. And to get a school district work permit for my 15 year old (to work at our own company no less). And to get her drivers license permit - but she also had to sign a paper in person in front of the doctor for the permit. The arguments AGAINST voter ID are absurd. Voting is an important responsibility and it would be simple to walk up to the voting place, give someone's name who will not be voting, and fraudulently vote. The ONLY reason to be against voter ID is to enable fraud.

I would believe in this law if student ids were valid and union cards. Why hunting licenses and not student ids? Why not union cards? There is no fraud. Bush/Cheney spent six years looking for in person voter fraud and found nothing. this is voter suppression pure and simple.

Nothing wrong with showing ID. The excuse "I don't have a brith certificate" is just too much. Go get one. Only responsible people should be allowed to vote, and if you can't manage the effort to get an ID, you have probably chosen the welfare system as your career choice. That means I a glad NObama will not get your vote. There are numerous support groups that will help almost anyone. If you're too lazy too call, then I am glad NObama is losing your vote. Yes, there will be a few who are left out through no fault of their own, but we also sentence innocent people to die that are wrongly convicted - and our system of justice is designed around that fact. So at least you will still be free and not sentenced to death.

I guess Unions deserve them because they are all honest and straightforward with everything they do. Maybe because hunting cards are government issued? Anyone can print a union card. I love voter supression if it means NObama will get booted out.
NObama 2012 August 15, 2012 at 10:25 PM
Well put crosbycat. It's absurd for so many people to whine "I can't get an ID". Really? I counted the minutes until I was old enought to have one. Just pure laziness for 99% of the whiners.

Like I said in another post "Yes, there will be a few who are left out through no fault of their own, but we also sentence innocent people to die that are wrongly convicted - and our system of justice is designed around that fact. So at least you will still be free and not sentenced to death."

I spent years overseas, getting harassed all the time by police asking for my ID. If I didn't have it, chances are pretty good I would have been "fined" or even taken to the immigration office. Illegals are lucky here in that respect, as is is generally not done because it is politically incorrect. I said "generally", not "never", for those of you who like to take things out of context. Nothing wrong will putting a little effort into something, even an ID Card.
NObama 2012 August 15, 2012 at 10:33 PM
You still have to be a citizen, and flashing an ID is certainly not an inconvenience to a good citizen. Welfare as a career choice does not equal good citizenship.

Bev August 17, 2012 at 12:17 PM
As an election worker, I see the voter ID law as a necessary step in conducting a fair election nationally, and am happy that PA is taking action in that direction.

Glad NObama has all the floks who can't spell, but know the Constitution like the back of their hand. Thanks for the laughs....... privlidges = privileges rite = right

@ Leqwanda Washington - Are you a real person or someone just having some fun with me/us? You BE college educated? Is that the grammar they teach in college now to prepare you for corporate America? Who is going to hire you to represent them when you speak things like "ain't able to judge" and "ain't got no basis to judge" and "I be college educated" and "I've done learned". That' pretty funny. By the way, I did go to college, and I have not been unemployed since I was in my early 20's, back in the 1980's. Also, I have never collected unemployment or welfare. I have made my own money, and I have had a good career, and have been able to travel and live around the world. I am not rich, but I earn a very good salary. I did not come from a wealthy family, and was actually not very well off growing up. I have done some sh*tty jobs to get by when I had to. Nobody ever gave me anythng. You sh*tbags on welfare are to proud to work shitty jobs, but not too proud to collect a check every month. Go get off your lazy ass*s ang get an ID, then get a job. Leave the welfare and unemployment for the people who really need it. I hope the Republicans win in November, and kick all you lazy b*stards off the welfare. I bet way more than half of you collecting don't deserve it, and you ruin it for the people who do need it.
