Pine to Pay About $850,000 to Add Turn Lanes on Route 910, Pearce Mill Road

Pine Township supervisors approve agreement with PennDOT to improve intersection.

A $3.5 million PennDOT project to add turning lanes to Route 910 and Pearce Mill Road and improve traffic signals at the roads' busy intersection in Pine Township has inched a little closer to reality.

The Pine Board of Supervisors voted 3-0 Monday to approve a contribution agreement with PennDOT that commits the township to paying an estimated $850,000 on the project.

Chairman Michael Dennehy, Vice Chairman Philip Henry and Supervisor Frank Spagnolo voted in favor. Supervisors Ted Owen and Edward Holdcroft were absent.

The funds will come from traffic impact fees that developers pay when new projects are built in the township.

Assistant Manager Scott Anderson said PennDOT also wants the township to pay for any cost overruns. Although the township asked for a cap on potential overruns, PennDOT would not agree to that, Anderson continued.

PennDOT agreed to pay the cost of inspections for the project; originally the agreement called for Pine Township to pay those fees, said Anderson.

Construction is to begin in 2013.

PennDOT will be replacing two bridges and culvert pipes on Route 910 as part of the project, Anderson said.

The supervisors also signed off on granting a right-of-way agreement to Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania so it can move its lines at the intersection.

Route 910 is a major east-west artery through the township that many motorists use to access the Interstate 79 Wexford interchange.

Pearce Mill Road is a major north-south road on which , and are located to the north of the Route 910 intersection. To the south, the road travels into .

PennDOT also plans to begin work this summer on two projects to address landslides on Pearce Mill Road, according to a PennDOT news release.

Work will begin this summer and continue through fall 2013.

Detours will be required for that work, which is estimated to cost $500,000 to $1.2 million, said PennDOT.
