Need a Pennsylvania Voter ID? Here's How to Get One

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will issue free voter ID cards to those who qualify.

In need of a state voter ID for November's election day?

Beginning today, residents can obtain a non-driver's license photo identification card for free at any of the state's Pennsylvania Department of Transportation driver's licensing centers.

All Pennsylvania voters must show identification when they vote in the Nov. 6 general election.

Voters must provide one of the following forms of valid identification to vote: 

  • A U.S. passport.
  • Driver's license. Expired driver's licenses are permissible so long as they expired within the last year.
  • A student identification from any accredited public or private university in the state.
  • Military identification.
  • Pennsylvania care facility identification, for those residing in assisted living or personal care homes. 

Those without forms of identification can receive free photo identification cards for voting purposes only at any of PennDOT's 71 driver's licensing centers statewide.

To receive the voter ID card, residents must provide their name, address, Social Security number, proof of residency and previous address if they moved in the past year.

Applicants must also complete a Pennsylvania Department of State ID application and sign an oath confirming that they are a registered voter. 

Residents will receive the identification once their voter registration has been confirmed. 

The voter ID will be valid for 10 years.
