Friends of Pine Community Park Golf Outing Tees Off Aug. 15

Event raises thousands for Pine Community Park.

Instead of conducting business on Aug. 15, will likely be giving each other “the business” at the 12th annual Friends of Pine Community Park 2011 Golf Classic.

“The profits go to the Friends of Pine Park,” said Supervisor Edward Holdcroft. “It does well. It’s a first-class event.”

Pine Parks and Recreation Director Joni Patsko estimates the outing, held at the Sewickley Heights Golf Club, raises on average $20,000 a year. ESB Bank is the presenting sponsor, providing prizes for the estimated 80 to 90 golfers who pay $250 apiece to play.

Sewickley Heights is a private course that is consistently ranked among the state’s finest.

In addition to raising money, the outing is the source of some good-natured ribbing among the supervisors.

When asked who among them was the best golfer, there was little disagreement.

Chairman Michael J Dennehy Jr. pointed to Vice Chairman Philip D. Henry.

“There he is right there, he’s a scratch golfer,” Dennehy said.

Holdcroft added, “He wins every year and we don’t know how he does that.”

Dennehy was quick to add, “He [Henry] doesn’t either.”

At first, Henry offered a simple, joking explanation.

“I cheat,” he said, which resulted in peals of laughter from all around. He then tried to give credit to his playing partner.

“Bob Amann kept score, he’s the chief of police.”

Holdcroft had another theory.

“They score by the Callaway system, which I don’t understand. I think the pro just reaches into a hat and picks out the foursome he wants to win.”

Callaway is a scoring system used in the event that the participants do not have an established handicap to use. It is popular for one-time events where all participants can be compared without any prior golf records.

No matter who takes home a trophy, Holdcroft insists Pine residents are the real winners in the event.

“The Friends of Pine donated the we’re building behind the community center,” he said. ”That’s $25,000.”
