YMCA Institutes Changes After Child Nearly Drowns at Baierl Family YMCA

The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that swimming is temporarily suspended at all 22 of its summer day camps because a 6-year-old almost drowned last month on a field trip from Carson Middle School to the Baierl Family YMCA.
Each camp site must be inspected and approved before it can resume swimming.
The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that swimming is temporarily suspended at all 22 of its summer day camps because a 6-year-old almost drowned last month on a field trip from Carson Middle School to the Baierl Family YMCA.
Each camp site must be inspected and approved before it can resume swimming.
The swimming ban started Tuesday after the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare notified YMCA officials that it needed to shut down the program the child was enrolled at Carson Middle School.
Camp counselors were not able to correctly or quickly identify their assigned campers, according to the report.
The Pittsburgh area YMCA centers have since overhauled its summer swimming programs, WPXI reports.

A color-coded bracelet system has been instituted. Green bracelets will be worn by advanced swimmers, yellow for beginners and red for non-swimmers, according to WPXI.
Counselors also will be assigned to watch no more than five children at a time.
