Wexford Volunteer Fire Company Receives New Communications Equipment Through Grant

The money will be used towards new mobile radio equipment.

Residents in Pine Township will be safer thanks to a $5,251 grant given to the Wexford Volunteer Fire Company for communications equipment.

Allied Insurance Brokers and Fireman's Fund Insurance Company are awarding the grant, which will enable more firefighters to communicate with each other—and other responding agencies—at the scene of an emergency.

Specifically, the fire department is purchasing mobile radios and related equipment to meet Federal Communications Commission requirements, a statement from Fireman's Fund Insurance Company said.

Thanks to the grant, firefighters can better articulate clear instructions and commands, which will aid in rescuing victims and helping to keep firefighters safe.

“Effective communication is critical at the scene of an emergency, enabling a more effective and coordinated response,” said Fire Chief Tim Flaherty. “We are thankful for this grant which enables us to better serve the community.”

The money will be presented to Wexford Volunteer Fire Department officials and firefighters at a special public event at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 7 at the fire station on North Chapel Drive.

The grant is part of a nationwide philanthropic program funded by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. Through the program, grants are awarded to fire service organizations for life-saving equipment, firefighter training and community education programs.

Since 2004, Fireman’s Fund has awarded grants to more than 1,900 different organizations totaling more than $30 million, including more than $830,000 in Pennsylvania.
