Wexford Fire Company President Questions IRS Audit
Dave Buttermore said the fees for the audit cost the volunteer fire department $3,300.
Wexford Volunteer Fire Company President Dave Buttermore said he doesn't understand why the IRS chose to audit the the volunteer fire department, costing them $3,300 in legal and auditor fees.
“I have talked to every fire company around, and no one has been audited by the Internal Revenue Service,” Buttermore said at Monday’s Board of Supervisors meeting in Pine.
Buttermore said the company was notified in April that it had been chosen for a random audit. In June, the organization spent about seven hours being audited, he said.

The fire company is still awaiting results of the audit, he said.
Buttermore noted the IRS only two years ago designated the fire company as a non-profit when the new fire station was built on North Chapel Drive in Wexford. To become a nonprofit, an organization must submitted detailed paperwork about the group to the IRS.

Buttermore pointed out the fire company is an all-volunteer organization that relies on funding from Pine Township to maintain operations.
“We don’t have fish fries, we don’t have bingo, we don’t have a club and we don’t have a bar,” he said.
Buttermore added he would have preferred the $3,300 in the auditor fees be spent on equipment or other ways to benefit the station.
“It costs just about that to fully outfit a fireman,” he said.
